Issue Report: Leopard 2A8 Historical Corrections
The current implementation of the German Rank VIII MBT, the Leopard 2A8, suffers from several critical historical inaccuracies regarding weapon elevation limits, its primary kinetic ammunition, and physical armor layout.
To prevent the vehicle from being an ahistorical downgrade, the following parameters must be corrected based on official manufacturing data from KNDS and operational specifications from the German Ministry of Defence (Bundeswehr).
SECTION 1: Gun Depression Inaccuracy (-7.4° vs -9°)
- The Issue: The main gun depression is currently locked at -7.4° across the entire forward traverse arc.
- The Reality: The -7.4° figure specified in the KNDS brochure does not represent a hardware limit. It is a localized FCS (Fire Control System) software safety lockout code meant only for a narrow 0-degree dead-center azimuth to avoid collision with early variants of the SPECTUS driver camera module. On production Bundeswehr hulls, the SPECTUS II housing is recessed lower into the glacis plate. Mechanical and physical clearance allows the turret to reach its native hardware limit of -9° as soon as it traverses slightly off-center.
- Required Action: Increase the functional vertical guidance limit to -9°, consistent with War Thunder’s policy of omitting dynamic FCS software overrides for top-tier MBTs.
SECTION 2: Missing Primary Ammunition (DM73 APFSDS)
- The Issue: The tank is missing its historically paired, next-generation kinetic energy penetrator.
- The Reality: The official Bundeswehr document explicitly links the Leopard 2A8’s L55A1 high-pressure barrel with the deployment of the DM73 sub-caliber armor-piercing kinetic projectile. The DM73 utilizes a brand-new high-energy surface-treated propulsion system designed specifically to maximize the increased chamber pressure limits of the L55A1 gun. In the game’s ballistic environment, this translates to an increased muzzle velocity and an estimated flat penetration increase of 50–60mm (~780–800mm point-blank), which is vital for engaging Rank VIII heavy ERA arrays.
- Required Action: Add the DM73 APFSDS projectile to the vehicle’s modification tier list as its top-performing tier-4 kinetic round.
SECTION 3: Under-modeled E-Tech Composite Armor Pack
- The Issue: The current physical armor values do not reflect the completely overhauled internal structure of the new-build hull.
- The Reality: As confirmed by KNDS and Bundeswehr specifications, the Leopard 2A8 is not a refurbished older hull; it is a completely new-build chassis (“kompletter Neubau”). It introduces the E-Tech advanced multi-layered composite matrix (Duel Protection Kit), which structurally integrates high-density tungsten alloy elements, next-generation silicon carbide/aluminum oxide ceramics, thick top-attack roof armor arrays, and internal spall liners.
- Required Action: Buff the kinetic (KE) and chemical (CE) protection coefficients of the turret cheeks, upper frontal glacis, and turret roof to match the designated E-Tech operational profile.
SECTION 4: Incomplete Subsystems Integration (RCWS & APS Sensors)
- The Issue: Roof-mounted weapon operation and radar warning capabilities are under-represented.
- The Reality: The remote-controlled weapon station (RCWS/FLW 200) is operated completely from behind sub-armor security (under-armor), meaning the crew cannot be knocked out by machine-gun fire while using it. Furthermore, the 4 active EL/M-2133 radar panels belonging to the integrated Trophy APS suite feed directly into the vehicle’s C4I battle system, acting as an omnidirectional Laser/Radar Warning Receiver that automatically detects threat directions.
- Required Action: Model the under-armor RCWS operation and grant the Trophy radar pods a secondary functional role as a threat direction indicator on the player UI.
