About this ship and its interest in War Thunder
The LCG 111 seems to me like a good option for a br. 2 to 3 gunboat to fill the gap the French tech tree may experience before the bigger ships. Having served and fought during the Indochina war, being well armed in both artillery and AA weaponry, it is in my opinion quite a good contender for the French navy, which will be quite welcomed alongside ships like the German anti air ferries or the Russian gunboats.
About the Landing Craft Gun (Medium)
The LCG was created by the British navy as a modification of the Landing Craft Tank mk. IV, a transport ship launched and overhauled since 1940. The Landing Craft Gun was first introduced in 1942 and participated to numerous operations, most notably the liberation of Belgium and France. It was conceived as an artillery support ship for troop landing. Low on the water, with a flat bottom, it is able, thanks to ballasts, to beach itself to the bank of a river to stabilize its artillery.
About the LCG 111 (9059)
The LCG 111 was the only one of its kind in service in the French navy. It was bought in Portsmouth, and arrived in Saïgon during winter 1948, where it was immediately put into service. It was renamed L9059 shortly after to comply with NATO regulations. It fought mostly in Cochinchina, where it provided artillery support and patrolled the rivers of the region. It operated mostly around the Mekong Delta, and near Cà Mau. The French nicknamed it the “River Battleship”, as it was one of the biggest warship to sail inside the land. It was used until the end of the war, and was finally condemned in 1956.
