  • Description :
    • The Lazar 2 IFV is a variant of the LAZAR 2 MRAP, or Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle that focuses on providing fire support for attached personnel. The vehicle was developed in the late 2000’s by Serbian manufacturer Yugoimport with the first unveiling during the military defense exhibition Partner 2013 in Belgrade. The LAZAR 2 IFV is a revolutionary design compared to the original LAZAR 1 project, featuring several crew survival enhancement features, new propulsion, as well as a significant increase in firepower. To protect the crew, the vehicle was designed utilizing an armored (STANAG 4569 Level 2a/2b) V-shaped hull to protect against mine or IED threats, allowing to disperse explosive energy away from the vehicle. The under armor can be further enhanced to increase survivability against larger-yield explosive devices, or in NATO standards, STANAG 4569 Level 3a/3b. For kinetic threats, the vehicle was designed to be adaptable, featuring STANAG 4569 Level 3 Armor protection which provides a minimum all-around 7.62mm AP protection which can be enhanced with addon armor to meet all-around STANAG Level 4 Armor protection which protects against 14.5mm AP rounds. The front of the vehicle, due to its wedge design can handle even higher caliber rounds/cannon fire. In terms of mobility, the vehicle utilizes a 8x8 chassis which is powered by a 500hp Cummins ISM 500 Diesel Engine coupled to a Allison 4500 SP transmission to provide speeds of up to 100km/h. Some automotive components have been sourced from Russian Kamaz military trucks. It is also worth noting that the LAZAR 2 is not amphibious. The LAZAR 2 IFV is crewed by 3 personnel, the Commander, Gunner, and Driver. The Driver is located in the front with the engine located to their right, the Gunner is located in a one-man turret, the M91E II, with the Commander located below the Gunner. The Gunner’s station allows for the control of the vehicles fire control system which provides guidance and tracking for the main gun, a stabilized 30mm M86 autocannon which is based off of the Soviet AK-230 gun, capable of a rate of fire of up to 650rds/min. The main gun is fed by a 200rd belt which, in order to fire different types of ammunition must swap out the entire belt. The system is not dual-fed like many other autocannons. This feature has been implemented with the 30mm M89 autocannon which is being further developed for the M91E II turret. Above the main gun is a 7.62mm M86 machine gun (note, the M86 designation has been used with both the autocannon and coaxial machine gun) which is linked to the main gun. Next to the machine gun, the Gunner also controls a U-10 ATGM launcher which houses 2x rails to launch the 9M14-2T or 9M14-2F Malyutka missiles which are a further development of the Soviet 9M14 Malyutka anti-tank guided missile. The 9M14-2T is equipped with a new standoff probe and filler, allowing penetration of up to 750mm of RHA behind ERA. This missile has the capability to penetrate many modern vehicles. The -2F variant utilizes a thermobaric warhead to target soft targets, light vehicles, or fortifications. Both missiles use SALCOS-wire guidance, greatly improving probability of contact. One major drawback of both missiles is the missiles still utilize the original rocket motor used from the Soviet-era 9M14, providing a range of 500m out to 3km with a max speed of 120m/s which can easily be shot down by modern active protection systems. 2x additional missiles are stored within the vehicle. The Gunner is equipped with a wide-angle CCD camera for day or night operations. The camera features a day-sight subsystem with 12x magnification, as well as a thermal imager, and integrated laser range-finder. The Commander has access to an optionally mounted independent thermal viewer or CITV which can provide the Commander with Hunter-killer capability. The Driver has access to Thermal cameras to aid in day or night driving. For embarked personnel, there are 10x, or 5x on each side bullet proof windows/firing ports with an additional two in the rear. For countermeasures, there are 4x 82mm BDK M79 Smoke Grenade Launchers that are mounted on the turret. Currently there are 6 LAZAR 2’s in use by the Serbian military. Export sales are available with Pakistan purchasing 2x LAZAR 2’s as well.

  • In-game :
    • The LAZAR 2 IFV is a highly mobile and deadly IFV that would be particularly effective at flanking, scouting, and point capturing. It is equipped with a deadly 30mm autocannon capable of firing 30mm AP rounds which can be used to target ground or air targets thanks to its target tracking features as well as a very powerful ATGM, capable of penetrating 1,000mm of RHA through ERA that can knock out modern main battle tanks. The Gunner can utilize efficient thermal sights to target these threats in day or night operations. Not only this, it can be upgraded with heavy modular armor, protecting the crew and vital components against high caliber rounds such as 14.5mm AP. However, it does have some major drawbacks worth noting. The 30mm autocannon is limited by its 200rd belts that must be swapped by the Gunner to utilize different ammunition which can take some time. Not only this, but the powerful ATGM mounted on the roof is in an upward direction, which makes it difficult to use in CQB situations. Also it is based off of the original 9M14 Malyutka which shares its original drawbacks of a max missile speed of 120m/s as well as a maximum range of 3km. However, the LAZAR 2 IFV will be very effective as a supporting vehicle and would suit well in any future independent Yugoslavian Ground Forces Tree.
