Hello everyone, and welcome to this new suggestion!
Today, I’m starting a new series of suggestions dedicated to ships in the current French fleet. To kick things off, we’ll be focusing on one of the most iconic classes of the French Navy: the La Fayette class (FLF), and more specifically, the first ship in this series, the frigate La Fayette (F710).
The La Fayette-class frigates are multi-role vessels designed to fulfill a wide range of missions within the French Navy. Versatile and modern for their time, they can be used for escorting and protecting strategic vessels, such as those of the French carrier strike group, as well as for maritime surveillance operations, counter-narcotics operations, and combat missions in conflict zones. Thanks to their range and rapid deployment capabilities, they have long been an important element of the French military presence around the world.
The La Fayette class also represents a major milestone in the history of French shipbuilding. These frigates were the first French surface ships to significantly incorporate radar signature reduction technologies. Their design is based on angular hulls, carefully engineered superstructures, and the use of specific materials to limit their detection by enemy radar. Upon entering service in the 1990s, these vessels were considered particularly innovative and were among the most modern ships in the field of naval stealth.
Ordered in the early 1990s, the frigate La Fayette was designed by the French shipyards of Cherbourg and Lorient. The ship was launched in 1992 before officially entering service with the French Navy in 1996. Based in Toulon, the frigate was quickly deployed to numerous international theaters of operation. Throughout its career, the ship participated in several major French and multinational operations. Notable examples include its presence during operations related to the war in Afghanistan, missions conducted in Lebanon, and military interventions in Libya in the early 2010s.
After more than twenty-five years of service, the French Navy decided to launch a modernization program to extend the operational lifespan of the La Fayette-class frigates and ensure their continued effectiveness against modern threats (three of the five frigates were modernized in the same way, while the other two received some different equipment). Several important pieces of equipment were replaced or upgraded. A new hull-mounted sonar was installed to enhance the ship’s underwater detection capabilities. The aging Crotale air defense system was replaced by two Sadral systems using short-range Mistral missiles. These improvements should allow the La Fayette frigate to remain in service until 2030, or even longer if necessary.
The ship is named after Marquis Gilbert du Motier de La Fayette, a major historical figure of the 18th and 19th centuries. In France, he is particularly known for his role during the French Revolution and for having participated in drafting the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen. But he is also highly respected in the United States for his commitment to the American insurgents during the Revolutionary War. His military and political support for the American colonies has made him an important figure in Franco-American history.
Characteristics
Length : 125.00 m
Width : 15.40 m
Draft : 4.10 m
Displacement : 3700 tons
The vessel is powered by four SEMT Pielstick diesel engines, giving it a total power of 21,000 hp. Its maximum speed is 25 knots, and its range is 4,000 nautical miles at a speed of 15 knots. The ship’s crew consists of 150 sailors.
Equipment
The ship’s equipment is, as one might expect, particularly impressive, featuring numerous radars and detection systems as well as various defensive equipment.
Radar :
- 1 x DRBN-34 navigation radar
- 1 x DRBV-15C sea-air radar
- 2 x Fire control radars (one for the main gun and one for the sea-air missiles)
Sonar :
- 1 x Hull Sonar
Other detectors :
- 1 x ARBR-21 RWR
Decoys :
- 2 x Dagaie Mk2 decoy launchers
- 1 x AN/SLG-25 towed torpedo decoy
In addition, the frigate can carry one attack helicopter and its equipment, either a Panther or a Caïman Marine. These aircraft are equipped with equipment and armament that allow the frigate to extend its attack and defense range against other vessels.
Weapons
In terms of armament, the La Fayette is particularly versatile, equipped with several types of weaponry allowing it to engage all types of targets. These include:
Cannons :
- 1 x 100mm/55 Mod.100TR
- 2 x 20mm 20F2 Giat
- 4 x 12.7mm
Missiles :
- 1 x CROTALE system (8 missiles) - decommissioned in 2021
- 8 x MM-40 Exocet missiles
- 2 x SADRAL system (6 missiles each) - since 2021
This ship is obviously not meant to be added to the game; it’s a modern vessel dependent on technologies that are not yet implemented. However, with the eventual arrival of such technologies and ships, the La Fayette would be a particularly interesting addition, providing the first modern stealth ship for the French tech tree.
