History and Description

At the “Partner 2009” arms and military equipment fair, Kurjak (Black Wolf) reconnaissance combat vehicle was introduced as a modernization of the obsolete 9P122 and 9P133 vehicles (both based on BRDM-2 chassis). Kurjak is an armored car modernized by Yugoimport SDPR for combat reconnaissance operations. It can transport up to 8 fully equipped infantry soldiers, provide fire support for embarked crew, and conduct combat reconnaissance and command missions (fitted with panoramic optronic surveillance and observation systems, battlefield management systems, and GPS navigation systems). Due to Kurjak’s applied design philosophy and powerful armament, it can be successfully deployed in low-intensity conflicts, peacekeeping, and peace enforcement operations as well as missions conducted by special forces and rapid deployment units. Kurjak was offered to foreign delegations from developing countries as an opportunity to modernize their fleet of BRDM vehicles. There wasn’t much interest in the vehicle, so the project was shut down after a few years, and this version was never exhibited at another military fair. As a result of the failure of this project, all options for modernizing the BRDM and its variants were abandoned.

One of the most significant changes was a newly designed open-top turret with a built-in 20 mm M75 anti-air gun. Known for its high reliability and operational simplicity, the M75 can engage a wide range of targets, including lightly armored and non-armored targets, concentrated zones of manpower, and low-flying fixed and rotary-wing aircraft. The gun can be traversed 360 degrees and elevated from -8 degrees to +83 degrees. It can be fed from a ten-round clip or a sixty-round drum magazine.
Another noticeable change is the integrated multi-sensor observation device - TOMS (tenkovska osmatraćko merna sprava). It combines a laser rangefinder, a wide-angle CCD TV camera, a narrow-angle black-and-white TV camera, and a thermal imaging device. The basic idea is that by uniting as many different sensors as possible, they cover the electromagnetic spectrum as well as possible. This increases the chances of detecting a target. The basic purpose of TOMS is to observe the area around a vehicle, both during daylight and during reduced visibility. All sensors are placed in a metal case, which provides ballistic protection from 250m from the caliber 7.62X54mm
The high mobility of the vehicle was ensured by replacing the old high-consumption GAZ-41 V8; 140 hp (107kW) gasoline engine with a new diesel one. For this, an American AMG 6.5 liter turbocharged eight-cylinder water-cooled diesel engine with 128kW (173 hp) at 1400 rpm (used on HUMMER-class vehicles) was used. The newly installed engine and the existing gearbox were connected with a new dry friction clutch and a new coupling shaft. With that, the top speed was increased to 105 kilometers per hour. The amphibious properties as well as the existing retractable auxiliary wheels of the original vehicle were preserved.
