In commemoration of the violent 1956 Hungarian uprising, I propose this decal known as the Kossuth Coat of arms that was painted on many captured T-34-85s by the rebels in order distinguish themselves from the Soviet & Hungarian People’s Army perhaps obtainable as a event decal.
Now what does it represent?
First of all, it is named after Lájos Kossuth, a Hungarian freedom fighter proclaiming the 1st Independent Hungarian state which survived only for 5 months in 1849 in an act of revolt against the Austrian Habsburg monarchy.
The shield has two parts, the left side is made up of red and white “Árpád stripes,” which originate back to the House of Árpád dynasty in the 9th and 10th centuries.
The four white stripes represent the four rivers:
- Danube
- Tisza
- Dráva
- Száva.
The red and white are divided seven times and this is said to represent the seven Magyar tribes that joined to form the Principality of Hungary in the 9th century. On the right side of the shield is a double cross sitting in a crown, placed on three hills, which represent the Tátra, Mátra and Fátra mountain ranges located in the Carpathian Basin.
