Kopp-Etchells Effect for Helicopters

Hello guys!I’m here to suggest a “simple” yet beautiful and interesting mechanic into the game. I’m talking about the Kopp-Etchells Effect!

“But what is it?” You may ask.

This effect (named after two KIA soldiers) happens mainly by rotary-wing aircrafts (helicopters) when operated in deserts or sand-rich environments. As you can see by the image above, the effect produces a halo-like ring around the rotor blades. The effect is visible no matter the time of the day,but it is best seen during the night.

“How does it work?”
It’s very simple: rotor blades (especially their tips) are protected by an abrasive shield that is quite hard, but not as hard as sand (especially quartz). As the helicopter approaches the ground, the downwash generated by the blades push the sand up and violently, causing the abrasive shield to lose some fragments. Those fragments are rapidly oxidized and they ignite instantly, creating this effect.

If you haven’t understand (it can happen,i’m bad at explaining things), it’s like when you grind metal: sparks come out of it, no?the Kopp-Etchells effect is basically the same thing.

“So how could this work in War Thunder?”

Basically if you play any helicopter in any desert or sand-rich map and you are below a certain altitude (we’re talking a bit below 100 metres),you start pushing sand all over you and your helicopter magically has this halo around it! Said halo is always visible, but its visibility would be the lowest during day battles and the highest during night battles.

“But by doing so i would be visible!”
True, but consider that this effect happens basically when the helicopter is either on the ground or is mere metres from landing,so the only occasions you’ll find this effect is when you’re taking off/landing or when you’re hugging the ground. Flying even above 100 metres will remove this effect immediately.

Let me know if you’re interested in this effect, and i’ll leave you some photos as well as a video showing the effect

can I get a hell yeah?

Funnily enough the effect takes place exactly at that altitude.

Witnesses described seeing the effect at max 100 feet, which is exactly 30,48 metres.

Even the video i linked shows the effect taking place when the helicopter is really close to the ground.

There’s already existing mechanics that generate dust when the helicopter wash strikes the ground (blowing snow, blowing dust, etc.), so the software ‘hooks’ and conditions already exist, which is good.

It seems fairly straightforward to use that hook in conjunction with time of day, map, helicopter height above ground, and a certain amount of RNG to have it happen or not… It has been reported to happen up to 1700’ AGL, but that’s certainly going to be so rare as to be zero in a War Thunder situation. I would think it only could happen (and not guaranteed, even from one helicopter to another operating close to each other, but if it’s likely, then it should be likely…) in any of the sandy maps.

I especially like this demonstration of night ops with NVGs where the Osprey coming in starts the scene with just the rotor-tip lights on, and as is crosses the frame and gets lower (and presumably dustier on the other side of the wall) the Kopp-Etchells Effect starts happening, and it is quite a bit brighter than the rotor-tip positioning lights.

I mean,1700’ AGL is a fantastic height and is entirely common to achieve this height in a helicopter on War Thunder.

As i said, even seeing this effect when you’re landing is more than enough

Features like this are what makes War Thunder special.
