Establishment and Mission
The Kosovo Force (KFOR) is a NATO-led international peacekeeping mission that has been operating in Kosovo since June 1999. Its primary mission is to contribute to maintaining a safe and secure environment, as mandated by United Nations Security Council Resolution 1244.
Key Responsibilities
KFOR’s main responsibilities include:
- Maintaining a secure environment and ensuring public safety and order.
- Supporting and coordinating with international humanitarian efforts.
- Assisting in the development of a stable, democratic, and multi-ethnic Kosovo.
- Supporting the development of the Kosovo Security Force.
Composition and Structure
Initially, KFOR deployed with approximately 50,000 personnel from NATO member countries and partner nations. Over time, as the security situation improved, the number of troops has been reduced. As of July 26, 1999, KFOR’s total strength was more than 35,000 troops, including 5,488 U.S. and 1,474 Russian soldiers.
Current Status
KFOR continues to play a crucial role in maintaining peace and stability in Kosovo. It operates as the third security responder, after the Kosovo Police and the EU Rule of Law Mission (EULEX), working in close coordination with these entities.
