Ju 87 D-3 propagandistic camouflage.

History.

The Junkers Ju 87 “Stuka” is a German dive bomber and ground attack aircraft that debuted in 1937 in Spain in the ranks of the Luftwaffe. Italy, an ally of the Stuka’s German progenitor, took an interest, albeit a modest one, in the aircraft and in 1940 received a few examples (less than a hundred) that equipped a number of flight groups and carried out various wartime missions in the Mediterranean, North Africa and the Greek-Balkan area. Naturally, these aircraft were taken up by Italian draughtsmen and illustrators, who portrayed them in propaganda images for Italian postcards and posters, and one in particular was drawn in a war action against a presumably British battleship in the middle of the sea.

The camo.

The aircraft was coloured with an unusual camo for the type of aircraft it was. In fact, the camouflage scheme is in large irregular spots, similar to that applied on some Savoia Marchetti 75s and never used on the Italian Stukas (which used monochrome camo or semi-triangular cross-banded patterns). The camo has the tail with double green-red colouring, obviously divided by the Savoy cross, and spots identifiable as Dark Blue Green surrounded by a strip of Dark Camouflage Green on a Camouflage Green background applied on at least one Fiat BR.20 (example MAL 31) in the wings.
