“Jam Master” Decal
EF-111A Raven “66-0056” had a unique nose-art painted right next to cockpit during its deployement to Turkey during Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm. Assigned to 42nd Electronic Combat Squadron based at RAF Upper Heyford flew combat missions over Iraq. Whole 42nd ECS flew over 900 sorties without any combat loses (one plane lost in non-combat incident). At the time plane was flown by Captain Jeff Coombe and at least two different Electronic Warfare Oficers. One of them was SSgt. Dave Phelps.
The primary mission of the EF-111A and the 42nd ECS during the Gulf War was to jam enemy radars in support of friendly strike groups.
“66-0056” flew at least 40 such sorties.
Artwork is made of two parts: “JAM MASTER” inscription and character whose appearance resemble EF-111A. Nose-art was present on a aircraft for a short time and can’t be seen on every photo from that period.
This specific aircrat crashed on April 2nd 1992 at Buckton Hartshorn, UK. Plane suffered fuel duct failure which led to fuel leak that resulted in fire of engine bay. Pilot Capt. Jeff Coombe and EWO Capt. David Gevenish safely ejected.
