JA37DI Discussion

JA37D was way more advanced than F-4F ICE

I think it just gave the general info of being locked aswell as different tone based on type of threat locking you. You cant really get much info about this since manual is half classified still.

I mean as I said before its still pretty informative for what it is.

analog with only 4 antennas but at least it gives you info about LOCK, CW, HPRF, MPRF so you know when its just a lock from the jet, if its SARH being launched or if its ARH missile locking you

From the get go sure, but the F-4F had a better Radar (APG-65 is miles better than the Jaktviggen’s set), better avionics, newer computing avionics and was tested with much better equipment than the Ja-37D/Di, only thing the JA-37D really takes over it was the semi-digitalised cockpit

Excuse me? F-4F had no changes to computing devices. It had the old F-4E type cockpit with analog tech. JA37C was more computerised than that already let alone the digitalised D model.

You have to realise that JA37C/D radar is gimped in game and doesnt match its irl performance.

Flight Computers do not reside in the cockpit, that would make it a drone lol, the avionics of the F-4F ICE were newer and more powerful than the systems on the JA-37D: as listed here:
‣ Honeywell H-423 Laser INS (Inertial Navigation System)
‣ GEC CPU-143/A Central Air Data Computer
‣ Mil.Std. 1553R Digital Data Bus
‣ AN/ALR-68(V)-2 Radar Warning Receiver
‣ Radar Modifications to allow for integration into airframe and launch capabilities for AIM-120
These allowed for a general increase in computing power to handle the newer radar as well as the launching of AIM-120s

The viggen received a similar style of modifications to the radar but only saw a minimal improvement to electronics, it received a newer generation of mission computer (the one where codes and coordinates are typed in by the pilot), GPS tracking, a new radio and the multifunction screens as well as later in it’s life some ECM modifications

Part of what you listed isnt even ICE related and dont improve on its capabilities in intended role. RWR change is valid but it came with Peace Rhine upgrade already. As you said these changes allow F-4F to handle newer radar and AIM-120 integration which holds very small value when compared to JA37Di which had great TWS radar and jet-to-jet datalink from the get go and only improved on GPS integration and processing power of its onboard computer.

For small changes (as the ones you listed for ICE) D model also provided Viggen with new digitalised software allowing for new changes to be simply plugged-in the system aswell as new digital radio, mission computer, etc. See below:

Again F-4F ICE changes were absolutely required for it to even run the new radar and AIM-120 and yet it retained the old cockpit and instruments hence giving it abysmal situational awareness for its time. INS is nice but again when compared to actual GPS, datalink and MFD screen present in the Viggen since D model F-4F ICE really does fall short.

Viggens have worse flight performance compared to the drakens

The only exception being the AJ but since this is a D model it doesn’t matter. To put in simply and F4J can out turn you.

Note: My testing was with min fuel available to each plane, wich means that Phantom is 2000kg heavier and is still turning faster)))

Everytime I see these charts I ask myself if my Viggens run on some turbo fuel because I’m yet to lose a dogfight to F-4.

And it only gets better in sim where you can actually perform hight speed rate fighting in the Viggen.

The key is that the average player is a little… easy lets say

Ja37 could pull up to 30 degrees aoa tho the pilot does not like it nor the engine terribly much
The airframe safety would not let it past 23.5 for very long before screaming but theres most likely a way to disable it in case of emergencies
I believe 25 or 26 was really as far as the aircraft would let it go as above that the chances of a stall in the RM8B was very high

Sim they are very good, regardless dogfights just arent worth it in air rb unless you know you wont get tag teamed. You bleed speed far to easily and with the viggen damage model you get hit once anywhere you’re dead

That doesnt track does it? A noob will just stamp on the elevator and try a turnfight in every plane they are in. If so, and an F4J enters the fight with a Viggen and tries a turnfight it should win. So why dont they?

Ja37Di having IRCCM missiles
I have found SOLID evidence that the viggens used them

I’d advise on highlighting parts of the document saying that IRCCM was present on Swedish AIM-9L

Usually they want unedited photos so I just leave it be
Had complaints when they’re even mildly changed

Oh thats new to me

I mean it’s only a page anyway and it says it pretty early on

Yeah I did read that part
