J 20 Has the Wrong Camouflage. (poll)

This has been on my list of things to bring up and properly talk about for a while now. With most of the current errors and reports for the J21 finally wrapped up, I can move on to the next topic I wanted to highlight: the J20.

Below is an image of the current J20 as it appears in War Thunder.

At the moment, the Swedish J20 is depicted using a summer-style Italian camouflage. To be clear, this is not entirely incorrect — the first J20s that Sweden received did arrive in this camouflage. However, this scheme was never particularly well-suited to Swedish operating conditions, especially when compared to the environments it was originally intended for.

Sweden’s landscape is dominated by dense forests, darker terrain, rocky ground, and generally lower-contrast lighting for much of the year. As a result, this lighter, more Mediterranean-style camouflage proved suboptimal and made the aircraft stand out more than desired, particularly when viewed from above.

Because of this, most J20s were later repainted into a darker forest green and brown camouflage that better matched Sweden’s natural environment.

Below is an image of the historically more representative J20 camouflage.

This later scheme is far more distinct and purposeful. The deeper greens and browns break up the aircraft’s outline far more effectively against forested terrain and align closely with the camouflage philosophy seen on other Swedish aircraft of the period. It also better reflects how the J20 was operated for the majority of its service life in Sweden.

Beyond historical accuracy and visual consistency, this change would also provide a practical gameplay benefit — particularly in Simulator Battles. Against the darker green and brown background, the Swedish national insignia stands out more clearly, making aircraft identification easier and more reliable in SIM. This helps reduce friendly-fire incidents and allows Swedish aircraft to be distinguished more quickly without relying solely on shape recognition.

While the current in-game camouflage represents an early configuration, it arguably does not represent the J20 as it was most commonly seen or used. Updating the default camouflage — or alternatively adding the forest green/brown scheme as an additional option — would improve historical authenticity, visual coherence, and gameplay clarity.

In short, the current camouflage isn’t wrong, but it isn’t complete. Representing the later and more widespread Swedish forest camouflage would be a meaningful improvement for both realism and gameplay.

What do you think would be best?
  • Replace the current one to avoid confusion.
  • Add along the original one as a researchable skin.
  • Dont add.

But I’m curious, what does “J” represent in Swedish airplane names

Jakt /(Interceptor)
Attack /(Strike Aircraft)
Bomb /(Bomber)

Spaning /(Recon)
