I've been wondering about something

In real tanks, can you see part of the gun barrel through the commander’s sight or gunner’s sight at low magnification? I assume it depends on the tank.

In War Thunder, the gun barrel seems to be completely invisible through some sights, even at low zoom. Is that realistic?

I’ve never been inside a real tank, so I’m genuinely curious.

I’d love to hear from anyone who knows more about this.

in realistic and arcade battles, the gunner sight is inside of the barrel, which is not at all realistic. there is an option, “camera from tank gunner sight” which forces the game to use the realistic position of the sight regardless of mode, that typically has the barrel visible.

Yes, that depens on the sight position and field of view which in some vehicles is very narrow allowing you to see only the tip of the barrel in most modern tanks. While olders didn’t had a expressive magnification so you would rely on the rangefinder at all times.

My point is that at low magnification, we should be able to see part of the gun barrel through the sight. That would be more realistic.

on the T-80U-E1, it is very visible in the realistic gunners sight. others may have the sight positioned purposefully to have the barrel not visible

in realistic and arcade battles the barrel is visually hidden so even if it were to impede the view it will not be shown

Which is something that is present in-game, as I said it’s rare to see most part of the barrel in modern vehicles because of the higher magnification, it’s the contrary on older vehicles with lower magnification, I think we should also consider the field of view as a separated agent for this subject, as two different things: field of view and magnification.

In the game, I don’t think you can see any part of the gun barrel through the sights.
