Like I can’t understand why this plane is just so crap. It’s literally a worse Fw 190 in every way other than guns. I have a hard time believing that the engineers kept pursuing a design that would just be worse than their previous models.
I heard a story, don’t know how true it is.
Kurt Tank was hopping into a Ta-152 to test it out. As he was getting ready to go, a couple of P-51s were in angry pursuit.
Tank quickly took off and engaged the MW50 and emergency (notzug?) boost mode, actually leaving them in the dust.
In game you’d be lucky to get only a kilometre of separation.
I don’t know if I entirely believe that. There’s no way an aircraft just taking off is going to outrun two aircraft already in the air. The only explanation is that either the Mustangs didn’t see the Ta-152 or they were more focused on the airfield itself.
You can outrun pretty much anything at altitude, including Shackletons if you come in at the right time.
I think the only exception is the F2G-1.
That was the H-1 variant afaik.
Generally speaking, C-3 isn’t not a dogfighter and was never meant to be one. Late stage war Germany was looking into ways of countering strategic bombers that their earlier 109s and 190s just could not reach due to altitude differences, several prototypes were created in reponse, but ultimately only the H-1 received a go ahead to enter production because it fulfilled the requirements (a few C-1s also flew into battle if I remember correctly, like, two).
The story aside, the C variants were mainly designed for ground-attack and medium altitude combat like their 190D relatives, but due to their increased length, weight and a lot more cannons, they ended being much heavier than 190Ds, which severely reduced their dog-fighting capability. Not to mention, their wing design remained relatively (or completely, talking from memory) unchanged from the Focke-Wulfs, as such they had very high wing loading coupled with being very nose heavy, affecting their turn rate.
(edit)
How accurate C-3s FM in WT is, I dunno, but it’s unlikely that it’s that far off from the real aircraft’s flight performance, and the real one was real bad at dogfighting due to abovementioned reasons, so.
Personally yeah, I think it’s one of them things you would never ever believe, unless you saw it with your own two eyes. Unfortunately, the book which the story is allegedly in is from 1998 and costs real money, plus it’s written in German.
The version of the story I heard is that Tank was already in the air when he noticed P-51s approaching him from behind, the second part is the same. Which seems far more plausible.
