The T-55AMD-1, is the top of the line modernization for the T-55 serie of tanks. This tank incorporates the Drozd active protection system, along with composite armor for the UFP. Currently, it sits at 9.0, where it fights vehicles that can very reliably penetrate its armor, especially tanks at 9.3 which it usually faces.
The only thing(s) the AMD-1 has going for it, is of course Drozd which is only reliable against projectiles being fired from beyond ~200 meters, and which travel under 700 M/S, it’s laser rangefinder, mid at best APFSDS, and the 9M117 gun launched ATGM.
I feel that with the introduction of T-72M1s for other nations, the stingray light tank (and more), that the AMD-1 should not be at 9.0, (though this would create an awkward situation where it would be at the same BR as the AM-1) It simply doesn’t stack up against its competition, and is often defeated by its better armored, and more mobile competitors.
The american equivalent, the M60 TTS is, (in my opinion) much better. I have played both of these tanks.
With that being said, I feel the reason that I think the TTS is superior, is because the matchmaker favors it more, usually giving it downtiers to 8.7.
This is sort of a weird area to close off on, though I have nothing more to say.

It has the better APFSDS for uptiers, 3BM25 is very long in the tooth above 9.0. Thermals are neat and that’s all I’ll give the TTS, I don’t like how tall it is and it feels sluggish vs 55AM-1
On one hand yeah it looks bad in comparison to 9.3 but see AMX-30B2 at 8.7 with mediocre mobility, weak protection and lack of stabilisation.
Imo game needs BR decompression like at the top tier with additional BRs like up to 16.0. We need more space between WW2 vehicles and cold war ones and more space between 8.7 and 9.3.
Not going to happen tho :) It’s too difficult.

they sure seem to. in my experience of playing the TTS i’ve got many more downtiers than with the AMD-1.

Most tanks have more reliable armor, in my experience. The M60s, the kpz, the Leopard 1 (with its paper armor) is sometimes more survivable, especially with turret shots.
The TTS gets thermal imaging, ERA which is better in most situations, more reliable APFSDS, and (in my opinion) better mobility.
The 9.0 T55s were arguably the best of the 8.7 MBT’s solid armor for what they are with decent mobility, well maybe the Soviet ones given the better engine.
I don’t think they should be .3 below the T72 but compressions gotta compress
While not exclusively an issue with the Stingray, there is defiantly a lot more tanks being added around that BR with 105mm DM-33 rounds that will go clean through the UFP with something like 200mm of pen to spare. it makes life pretty miserable for a tank with not much going for it but its armour.
But until Gaijin accepts that they need to decompress the BRs, what can you do? It will likely go back down at some point for a while, then back up while Gaijin plays their BR shell game of moving stuff around rather then actually fixing the issue.
I never see it played anymore,. Most people just ignore a 9.0 lineup entirely, as the 9.3 lineup is much better and the one amazing 9.0 vehicles (BTR-82), can be uptiered to even 11.7 without issue.
