Is the j2m2 ass or am I just trash?

Title, im speed grinding for the R2y2 and read a lot of people praising it, but so far i absolutely hate it.
Sure the climb rate is nice, but the compression makes diving a non option, the plane is extremely sluggish, and the guns are genuinely garbage and have appalling velocity, so why exactly are people calling this thing good?

Is there a specific playstyle i should try to make it work? Or is it one of those planes that used to be good but that got murdered by the matchmaking shifting and the meta with it?

please help D=

you get whiplash when a japanese prop actually has to play energy lol, dw it happened to me too. Use your climb rate, don’t follow people to the deck, and you should be good.

oh i already do those things actually, i test flew it a bit before playing and instantly recognized that its not meant to turn, the problem is at 5.0, youre outmatched by most planes and the guns simply DONT FUCKING WORK. Like you rely on people dogfighting you when in practice they just dive away and ignore you lol, its such a boring and pathetic plane.

It was super broken when it was 4.3 and gained quite much of bad rep when it was there.

I think it still can do fine if you get fully upgraded, as long as it is J2M
It might do way better than these worthless thunderbolts.

But Eh… stock grind will be brutal, I guess.
I am unsure you can fight against F4U-4B or Spitfire LF Mk.IX when your plane is not spaded yet.

20mm Type-99-2 is an insane gun.
Just try to get rid of the default belt as soon as possible.
My memories are a bit iffy as long as I didn’t play Japanese plane much
But 20mm FI with 5g HE and solid metal tracer in the default belt were a nightmare.

even worse than stock DEFA or ADEN

stock grind was ok, got it done quickly, but stock or spaded, this plane is still a lemon and i dont know why its 5.0, literally everything clubs you hard.

Unless you really want to play the J2M2, if you already have the A6M5 Otsu just play that. It’s 10x more fun imo as someone who hates being outturned in ARB

Edit: nvm, thought the J2M2 was in rank IV. Either way a zero will treat you far better

I think it is nothing more than a compression issue, I think.

I didn’t play much in J2M2, so I can’t talk much (I usually move up after I spade things)
But I wasn’t scared to fight against Uptier superprops when allied Ki-84 is in high place.

Engine is good enough to climb fast
20mm is brutal
Not as good as A6M, but still turns fine.

I don’t think J2M2 is 4.7 material like Ki-61-I Hei or P-47N.
Maybe fly like Spitfire but with a Japanese cannon?

First impression can be difficult as long as J2M don’t turn like A6M I guess.

Well, by the way, there can be taste on choosing the plane so I think it is fine to dislike the plane which everyone told that it is good.

M2 is the worst raiden by far. get M3 or M5, 7.62 being replaced by 20mm at 0.7 uptier helps a lot. it’s like Bearcat 1 MG being replaced with 20mm changes the plane completely.

oh for fucks sake of course i picked the worst one to play lol, thank you for the rec ill check the others out asap.

yeah ok, i flew it again today and at 5.0 its hopelessly outclassed, gaijin ruining yet another plane by putting it at a stupid BR. Never touching Raidens ever again.

The real problem of the J2M2 are the cannons, or rather, the absence of these, the performance is really good (you climb like a P-51H)

They still think its 2018

Only advice I got is for turning ability, deploy Takeoff flaps below 450kph to turn much better

I think J2M2 wasn’t [trash] and not outclassed yet. but Erm…

Do we need to play J2M2 in 5.0BR actively when we can access the same J2M but armed with double the amount of cannons in 5.7BR…?
When you are going to face Spitfire LF Mk.IX and F4U-4B actively, compared to when J2M2 was undertiered.

It still might be better than awful fighters like P-47D-30 or La-11, but just compressions and superprops are…

If you’d like to play a J2M and avoid P-51Hs and Mk24s… that’s the only option. J2M3 and 5 both see superprops. Though I appreciate the challenge sometimes.

How about J2M4 Kai? I heard it is trash, unlike J2M2 does. But I don’t know what is different about M4 Kai compared to others.

J2M4 adds an exhaust turbocharger at the cost of a great weight increase. It’s a terrible plane.

Damn, This chart reminds me my bad memories about Seafire FR.47
Thanks to saving my GE from buying J2M4 forevermore XD

ok, so ive flown it a bunch, and its not that bad, it just took me a bit to figure out “alright how does this thing work?”, so its not bad but its veryyyyy quirky and odd

yup, i was wrong, it def flies very well the higher you are, and i find the guns pretty good actually! :)

Yeah all of them suck in pretty much every regard. They can only BnZ and going beyond 600 IAS bricks up the elevators so hard that it can no longer perform the action known as “turning”. They turn decent at around 400 IAS but that will only beat the worst turners (P-51’s, Fw 190’s, possibly 109’s).

As a result, you dive on an enemy, you hit 600 IAS, enemy makes a slight turn that you can’t lead and you shoot past them.

In any other BnZer, you then use that extra energy you’ve gained to pull back up and climb again so you can attempt another pass. This isn’t possible in the J2M though. In the time it takes for you to struggle to pull it back up into a climb, it’s lost that extra energy and now the enemy can easily sit on your tail and probably kill you.

What makes the J2M2 variant especially fustrating is the arnament consisting of just two wimpy 20 mm model 1’s with 100 rounds each backed up by two 7.7 mm machine gun. This is a 5.0 plane and it has the exact same pathetic arnament as the A6M2-N and N1K1; tier 2 planes with a BR of 2.3. For comparison at 5.0, the Soviets have the I-225 with four nose mounted 20 mm’s and the UFO’s with three nose mounted 20 mm’s. The British have the Spitfire Vc with four Hispano’s. Americans have a 4.7 Corsair with 924 shells for four 20mm AN/M2’s. Germany’s Fw 190 A8 has four 20 mm’s with 780 shells backed up by two 13 mm’s. The Italian 5.0 G.55 is armed with three 20 mm’s with 650 shells in total. So having three or even four 20 mm’s with quite a bit of ammo is fairly common at this BR.

Then you’ve got the “upgraded” variants at 5.7. These somewhat fix the lack of firepower. Now they’ve got four 20 mm’s. The two useless model 1’s have 190 shells each and the two better model 2’s have 210 shells each. These 5.7 BR planes finally have a level of firepower that other nations start packing at around BR 4.7. However the J2M3 is still the exact same plane as the J2M2. Exact same performance with somewhat decent guns force it 0.7 higher. Then there’s the J2M5, it has a slightly weaker engine for a turbocharger to improve its performance at an altitude nobody fights at.

At the exact same BR, you’ve got a Ki-84 which is an absolutely brutal plane to fly. It can do everything the J2M tries to do whilst still being able to do other things as well.
