It’s a pretty common thing for this to happen, you should know that if you play APDS enough.
There’s a right way to aim the wrong rounds.

I played Sweden as my started 5 years ago. APDS has very little spall, and (way worse than it is now!) even less on thin armor like the BMP. That mixed with inconsistency lets you know you should aim center mass for the Gunner/Ammo carousel on them.

Engine blocks are modeled this way, a shell stops in its tracks when it hits one. It’s realistic for the majority of rounds other than relatively modern ones (late 80’s to 26’).
Try upgrading your vitality stats on crew, it’s what makes them soak up a shell or spall from enemy rounds.
