I want to download the full size client but there does not seem to be an option to do that over Steam, so I manually downloaded it over the launcher in the game files. Does that conflict with Steam in any way when the game updates (like downloading incorrect files), or is there no problem with that?

Yes, downloading files directly through an in-game launcher while keeping the game connected to Steam will cause technical conflicts during updates.
Because Steam natively manages War Thunder’s standard client files, forcing a manual full-client download via the launcher inside Steam’s directory will trigger a continuous loop where Steam deletes or overwrites your manually downloaded files every single time Gaijin rolls out an update.

I would strongly recommend backing up your keybinds before you try ANYTHING. I would also heed @Major_Claymore 's warning about potential issues with trying to use the War Thunder launcher in combination with Steam.
But please back up your keybinds. It is a huge hassle to lose your keybinds. Let us know if you need instructions on how to backup your keybinds 👍

oh theres absoulutely no issues doing it however u will need to download the steam high resolution assets as well i have done it before u don’t lose any keybinds.
I’ve done this in the past, it kinda works? It probably wont entirely brick your game, but if you ever wanna use user made content or join dev servers or that kind of stuff it won’t work. And it can occasionally cause some minor issues around updates.
