It would be cool for a sim EC tank battle. Where we all have to work together and we’re systems like this can be used in game like they r irl.
IRL they would NOT be on the map :)
Not even close to the map…
I am not an expert, but with enemies at 4km or less, direct fire would become a real possibility…assuming m109s can do that…IRL. I read somewhere that some (most?) mobile artillery are not even equipped with gunsights for direct fire…no idea on M109.
So you’re saying we need shared fire control? I can go with that… xD
TBH i actually think mobile artillery should NOT be in WT games…
It feels odd to use 155mm shells to kill tanks…usually tanks from early ages…
Reload is fast-ish, mobility is ok…self propelled guns feel like tank destroyers…powerful guns with little armor…
They work ok in game terms…not OP or such…but it feels “surreal”…personally would prefer if they were off map as support artillery…but i guess they are running out of tanks to add to the game…
I think the answer is in practice a definite no, the problem is that Gaijin has added mobile artillery and just clumped them in the wrong designation as Tank Destroyers which they definitely are not designed for. This is because they have no idea how to properly implement artillery as a player controlled vehicle, mobile artillery is not really that mobile and has armour only for protection against small arms and shrapnel, their position is way behind the front lines not spearheading an armoured attack.
As for use as a Tank Destroyer this is a last resort and a forlorn hope, we already have artillery player directed which is pretty effective.
This is unfortunately a product of Gaijin trying to add everything that flies, drives or floats into the game regardless of its real world shortcomings and how it can be fitted into the game. As much as it will annoy people WarGaming have done a pretty good job in adding player controlled mobile artillery vehicles into the game unlike Gaijin.
The implementation of artillery in World of Tanks is both unrealistic and fraught with issues. It is impossible for such unrealistic mechanics from an arcade game to be implemented in a game like War Thunder.
Your dislike of artillery vehicles in War Thunder is only an opinion. Many people enjoy playing artillery vehicles in War Thunder, as they are powerful in direct fire. And of course, indirect fire is possible with many vehicles in War Thunder as well. Yes, artillery are not meant to be used on the front lines, but it is possible and has happened in real life. We have a wide array of vehicles that are not used in the same conditions as intended in real life in War Thunder, yet they are still enjoyable for many players.
Also, it is very clear that you have no knowledge whatsoever on how to use indirect fire in War Thunder. It is possible to use any vehicle in indirect fire given an observer, although the effectiveness varies with the shell speed and other factors.
The problem is that would potentially remove the idea of Assault Guns as well since that was considered light artillery. Ho-Ni’s were designed to be Mobile Artillery. With indirect being massive suggestions to avoid direct engagements. Would be gone as well.
Unrealistic machines in WoT as opposed to the realism in WT, you need to stop drinking the Koolaid.
I do not dislike artillery at all I would love to play it as it used, not as a glass cannon piñata which how it is implemented in WT.
Using indirect fire in WT is just a gamble and sheer luck, no spotter in a F.O.P, no co-ordinates you are just firing blind with a single shell, there is a reason that S.P.A are in units. Also indirect fire is used with low velocity munitions that can be fired in an arc, using high velocity solid shot or rods is about as much use as a bicycle to a fish, they are designed to have a flat trajectory travelling way faster than as artillery shell.
WoT players loathed artillery they would have had an aneurism if subjected to C.A.S, it was called sky C because it could one shot you nearly anywhere on the map and you could not fight back, counter battery fire was the only way. It had drawbacks but no player complained when they got to take them out at the end of a game they were as easy stat-pad kill. So it got nerfed badly to the point of uselessness, but still more useful than the implementation in WT.
Are you implying that they are on the same level of realism? If you truly believe so, why not go play WoT instead of complaining on this forum? War Thunder is much more realistic than WoT. Even with the limited realism in War Thunder, compared to WoT, it is much better. WoT has the same level of realism as Shermans with bicycles for engines and potatoes or carrots for shells.
Artillery, although not an effective tactic in War Thunder, can be used to great effect against stationary enemy vehicles such as SPAA or enemies staying in a stationary firing position. I am surprised you are unaware of the existence of recon drones in War Thunder (and their use in artillery), as they have been present in the game for almost 2 years.
Recon drones are pretty rare on anything before the 2000’s, so I do not get a lot of chance to use them in the time frame I play in.
WoT and WT are just disguises on the same frame, there is not much you can fiddle with when the core is similar if nit identical it is just window dressing. Both are unrealistic .
If you think I was complaining then never ever work in a job dealing with the public you will melt your mind, I was merely stating that artillery is poorly implemented and integrated in both games due to players not happy with the idea of being eliminated by an unseen enemy, you only have to see the numerous threads about air support that seems to upset a lot of people.
Also we seem to be talking about two different era’s here, obviously you play end game stuff, I have little if no interest in that.
No you cant .Gaijin threw those vehicles in desperation to fill gaps. They are artillery but can’t be used as such. I would love it if they removed them all as they destroyed 6-7 which is so full of WW2 tanks. Now its a shambles and so many veterans play at the BRs below to try and get a sensible game.
If you look at how Armour fairs against modern artillery look at Ukraine ,believe me you dont want that in this game.
