Is it actually realistic that your radar locks onto a missile instead of the plane launching it?

I’ve been often getting in situations, where I’m trying to get a radar lock on an enemy, and at the same time they launch a missile, and then I get a lock on it, instead of the plane, and that really bugs me. So I have a question for people knowledgeable in radars, is that actually realistic? Because it seems counterintuitive to me, that the radars in game go for the smaller radar return, instead of the bigger one

It’s not. I know a couple radar nerds and they think it’s absolutely ridiculous. The missile is a much more challenging object to track at almost any range.
