IRIS-T - The pinnacle of IR guided Short Range Air to Air Missiles

Modern two-way datalink are even larger

hm i’m not so sure about that
MICA and AMRAAM are both meant for long ranges. Thats where the datalink is useful.
I dont expect Diehl to suddenly turn the IRIS-T into a long range IR AAM so they might need a less directional datalink

I’m surprised there is no 2-way datalink IR long-range BVRAAM as a counter-stealth tool.

Obviously not for an IRIS-T conversion as you said but I’m surprised there is no Meteor IR or something. Particularly given the effectiveness of PIRATE and IIRC Taiwan want to use Legion pods on their F-16V to the same effect.

aim-152 had some proposals like that but was cancelled.
the problem is likely price/practicality/necessity

what the hell is the HYDEF version?

newly in development hypersonic defence missle

Launch signature is quite smokey compared to AIM-9X and ASRAAM

development for defense against hypersonic threats such as HGVs or HCMs. its a 3 stage missile: Booster, Sustainer, KV, each with TVC and the KV with ACMs kinda like a BMD interceptor but its not there to hit exoatmospheric things but to increase maneuverability within the atmosphere. So far its planned to be a ship based interceptor.

And doesnt matter if you see it coming when u cant dodge either way

You aint dodging a iris t inside its range. Smokeless motor wasnt needed.

Yesn’t.

Theoretically with correctly modelled volumetric countermeasures, which BOL are, they should be defeatable from the correct aspects. This works because the countermeasure will completely obscure the launching aircraft from the seeker, while also being vaguely aircraft shaped. It would be similar to how the 9M is more reliably defeated from directly rear aspect.

Volumetric is only rear aspect.
And even then iris-t does have specialised heat form memory

…which is what I said?

Correct, that’s why it’s still just a kinda

Eh, since it only works in rear aspect, you will just have to pray that it doesn’t reaquire lock after passing through the volumetric flare. You would have to time it extremely precisely with an extremely hard pull the instant the flare obscures your entire plane to get it out of the way from the seeker before it sees you again.
