Even Aim-9B can actually be used as A2G missile let along the 9L, during Vietnam war Phantom pilots actually managed to lock on to surface heat sources and fired their sidewinders.

I mean considering piranha missile can track a single cigarette on test videos I can’t see any reason why other A2A missiles cant do that.

Similarly have heard anecdotes of ANG pilots using AIM-9B to lock the hot exhaust pipes of pickup trucks back in the day. Gaijin’s IR system is a load of nonsense.

Combined seeker is true AFAIK. Basically a radar combined with IR head.
That’s kinda the reason why I think it would never be added. The only way to escape this missile would be bleeding it of it’s energy.
You pop a flare? First it’s an IIR seeker, it doesn’t care. If you somehow would manage to flare an IIR seeker, well then it would compare your real trajectory via radar and just shut down the seeker/report a false-target. You multipath? Well then compare it backwards. You’re notching? Well IIR doesn’t even see chaff and flaring it from a side-aspect is practically impossible. Creating a fire wall of flares while multipathing might work in this game though, shouldn’t, but in this game it might.

to be fair, that should already partialy be happening trough datalink.
Not like gajin cares that a missle can use datalink and IR seeker at the same time or switch between the different methods as needed

They could just implement it like the IR slave to radar lock before launch on aircraft. Just not only before lock-on but also during flight. They have the logic already implemented, they just have to “reuse” it.
Does anyone here still have the IRIS-T SLM user mission, with targets across 262km and custom config stuff etc?
Just my feeling or this IRIS-T keep lock on target oftenly below 10km
Bah this IRIS-T SLM make me want to stop playing this garbage SPAA, the DL not working, the missile just lost interest to lock any target. German curreantly the only TT without counter for laser jamming except if you want to use FlaRakRad that even can’t identify mmunition/heli/plane, and the best part long reload time after 2 shot.
