Insignia of the 1st NZ Division - “Battle Axe”

Description:

Used by the Allied Forces to quickly identity allied units from both each other and from the enemy, this insignia would be painted on all vehicles used by the both the 5th new Zealand Division. Chosen for this role would be a large Battle Axe.

It would consist of a white battle axe on a red square background. As this was drawn individually per regiment, the artistic skill and thus detail would change between units, however the basic form would stay the same.

It would be placed on the left hand side of the vehicle along with the troop/squadron markings and Regimental insignia on the right.

History:

This insignia would be worn by all vehicles within the 1st NZ division, including regimental cars and trucks, but also the Stuart I Hybrids used by the 3rd Auckland East Coast Mounted Rifles (Armoured).

The division would be raised as one of three Home Defence divisions kept within New Zealand in case of Japanese invasion. The 1st was responsible for the North Island. It would be raised on the 1st of November, on the same day as the other home defence Divisions, the 5th and 4th. It would be organised as such;

1st Infantry Brigade
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3rd Battalion, Auckland Regiment
1st Battalion, Hauraki Regiment
1st Battalion, Waikato Regiment
12th Infantry Brigade
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1st Battalion North Auckland Regiment
3rd Battalion North Auckland Regiment (Maori)
Div Troop
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3rd Auckland East Coast Mounted Rifles (Armoured)
11th North Auckland Mounted Rifles (Armoured)
Div Artillery
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1st Field Regiment NZA
20th Field Regiment NZA

Due to the lack of Japanese invasions of New Zealand, the unit would see no combat, with the unit being dissolved on the 1st of April 1944, along with the other two Divisions. The men would be dispersed between other operational theatres within both the Pacific and Italian campaigns.
