Tank, Infantry, A38, Valiant: The Worst Tank Ever?

The A38 Valiant was a lightweight heavy tank based on the Valentine, intended for infantry support in the Pacific theatre where conventional heavy tanks would be too, well, heavy. If the idea of a “lightweight heavy tank” sounds absurd, that’s because it is. The difficulty of designing a vehicle to such specifications resulted in what is popularly regarded as the worst tank ever created, never entering production and with its role filled by more conventional medium tanks.

Best gun and armour of 3.0 and the worst mobility of anything ever created.
Had it enter service, I think Steven Hawking would have raced it and the bored tank crew would race bacteria against the Valiant

Not sure what the rpm would be, but the engine is listed as the GMC 6.71M in Bruce Newsome’s Valentine Infantry Tank 1938-45. The 17 pdr SP Valentine (“Archer”) used an rpm de-rated version of the same engine.

This is as opposed to the GMC 6.71S and GMC 6.71A found in Valentines from Valentine IV onwards. The S, A, and M are subtypes of the GM Model 6004 engine.

Correction; 210 bhp (212.91 ps) @ 2200 rpm

Oh, and as the 1943 Valiant shared the same powertrain (GMC 6.71M & Spicer gearbox) as the 1942 Valiant, the theoretical top speed remains at 16 mph (25.75 km/h), just with loss of acceleration due to the additional weight.

Apologies for not being able to meet the usual standard of two secondary sources, but this is my only source for information on the Valiant.

A lot of what Fletcher has claimed about A38 Valiant is untrue. Foot trapped, possibility of head being cut off, not in any of the reports according to Ed Francis.

Crusader pilot trials on the other hand…

The British: we want a heavy tank
Also the British: make sure it’s light
Poor designers
+1 from me

Yeah, the driver’s foot was could definitely be injured but being cut off is a gross exaggeration lol

It’s obviously a yes. +1

A +1 from me! How we still don’t have this thing in-game is truly baffling!

+1 why not

Don’t get your foot stuck between the pedals

IF your crew is not safe while operating it, I would call it a bad design worthy as a contender for “worst tank to exist”. Still, there are countless more that suffered from bad designs and are already in-game, like the Italian L3/33 where the gun is too weak and the crew too crammed in for AT warfare or even the KV-2, which had issues with fumes venting into the crew compartment, risk of damaging and injuring the crew if the gun was shot while aiming sideways. The M247 Sergeant York that had aiming issues with the FCS (and aimed at the public while on a technical display to the US military command) and so on…
