‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ TNI-AU Low-Visibility Roundel‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎

Hello everyone! Today I would like to suggest the Low-vis version of the Indonesian Air Force’s roundel. The low-vis version can usually be found on the modern camos of the Air Force, which includes but not limited to: T-50i, F-16s, Su-27/30s and the Rafale EI/DI.

The Indonesian Air Force was originally established shortly after the Nation’s independence, initially using a modest fleet of leftover airframes abandoned by the Japanese post-war. During its early years it helped the fledgling nation protect its borders against threats both from within and outside the country. In the mid-20th century it underwent a massive modernization phase, importing a large number of Eastern Bloc equipment which helped it into a significant combat force in Southeast Asia. A change of the government prompted a transition to western-made equipment, which results in a more diverse fleet of aircraft. Today the Air Force is still modernizing its capabilities for future combat.

The roundel of the Indonesian Air Force underwent several design evolutions throughout the years. From 1945 to 1948, the aircraft sported a red and white flag in a circular roundel, which are often times just painted over the Japanese Hinomaru roundel. This design was later changed to a square flag design between 1950-54.

The final design change occured in January 21st, 1954 with Air Commodore Soerjadi Soerjadarma issuing Decree no. 8/5/Pen/KS/1954 which entails officially adopting the red and white pentagon shape to represent the Indonesian concept of “Pancasila”, the five foundational principles of Indonesia. The Pentagon symbol was officially adopted as the main roundel on April 9th 1954 to mark the Air Force’s 8-year anniversary. The decree mandated that the pentagon roundel be painted on the left and right hand side of the fuselage (flanked with the aircraft role & registration numbers), and above both of the wings. Under the wings however the roundel should only apply to the starboard side wings and not on the port side. The emblem (and its low-vis variant) remains the standard roundel used on all Indonesian Air Force aircraft to this day.

New Decree for aircrafts to use the Pentagon marking instead of the older red-and-white flag
