3.3 Air Wing Tail Insignia
Hello everyone! Today I would like to suggest the Indonesian 3.3 Air Wing/11th Air Sqd tail insignia decal. This tail insignia is a relatively new one, with it only being properly used starting this year due to the restructuring of the Air Force’s Air Wing back in January. With Indonesian Air Force decals’ implementation seemingly on the horizon, I think this would be a good option. Rather than a basic emblem, its a bit more interesting and unique, and more importantly, it is actively being used by the squadron itself.
A. Background
Details
The 11th Air Squadron (nicknamed “Thunder”) was officially established on the 1st of June 1957 at Andir Air Base (Modern-day Husein Sastranegara AFB) in Bandung, West Java. Its origin can be traced back to the “Kesatuan Pancar Gas” (Jet Engine Unit) which was originally formed in early 1956. The unit operated Indonesia’s very first jet-powered aircraft, namely the DH-115 Vampire donated by the British. In the mid-20th century, the squadron eventually transitioned to operating eastern-bloc hardware, such as the MiG-15 and the MiG-17. The squadron had also participated in numerous exercises and military operations throughout the years, these operations include fighting the RMS, Permesta, as well as taking active operations during Operation Trikora and Dwikora.
After relocation through several different Air Bases, such as Kemayoran and Iswahjudi, the squadron experience temporary liquidation in March 1974 due to a lack of servicable soviet aicrafts due to a breakdown in relation after a change of leadership of the nation. This would not be permanent however, as the squadron was eventually reactivated in October 1980 with the advent of the A-4 Skyhawks, and it eventually goes back to its Eastern-European identity with the new Sukhoi 27/30 purchased in 2003.
11th Air Squadon itself is under the 3.3 Air Wing. The 3.3 Air Wing is an operational unit under Group 3/Fighter of the Indonesian Air Force Operations Command (Koopsudnas) tasked with organizing technical training and keeping operational readiness of aicrew members within its subordinate squadrons. The Air Wing is headquartered at Sultan Hasanuddin AFB in Makassar, South Sulawesi, the same AFB the 11th Air Squadron is based at.
The 11th Air Squadron (alongside other cargo/recon squadrons) was originally under one Air Wing, which was the 5th Air Wing. However the air wing and subsequent air squadrons were restructured in late January 2026, where each squadron’s roles are separated and not unified (for instance 1 air wing dedicated to combat squadrons instead of a collection of squadrons). This restructuring is aimed to strengthen and optimize the operational effectiveness, command structure, and defence capabilities of the Indonesian Air Force. Alongside that restructuring came a new insignia, the change can be seen in the two images below
