3.2 (Formerly 3rd) Air Wing Tail Insignia
Hello everyone! Today I would like to suggest the Indonesian 3.2 Air Wing tail insignia. The decal consists of two stylized decal shaped like a bird, with two different variation, one with bold colors of red and yellow, and another low-visibility option with it being colored dark grey. This decal is used on the tail of many different Air Squadrons both currently and in the past, including the F-16s of both the 3rd & 14th Air Sqd, the t-50is of the 15th Air Sqd, as well as the older & retired F-5E/Fs in the late 90s-early 2000s.
A. Background
Details
The 3rd Air Wing was originally called Wing Ops 003/300 (300th Operational Wing). The Wing was formed on November 17, 1961 and consists of airframes such as the MiG fighters, and the Tu-16 & Il-28 bombers. The wing was later re-established under the Air Force Chief of Staff decree Skep/6/III/1999 on March 16th, 1999. The Wing is a vital combat air unit of the Indonesian Air Force headquartered at the Iswahyudi AFB in Magetan, East Java, with its core mission being to provide technical guidance, coordination, and operational readiness for aircrews within its assigned Squadrons.
3rd Air Wing (Old Emblem)
The Wing comprised of several fighter squadrons, namely the 3rd Air Sqd which primarily operates the F-16 Fighting Falcons, the 14th Air Sqd which also operates the same airframe, and The 15th Air Sqd which operates the South Korean T-50 Golden Eagles. Following the restructuring of the 3rd Air Wing in 2026 the 21st Air Sqd was also incorporated into the same air wing, this squadron operates the EMB-314 Super Tucanos. The restructuring was primarily conducted in order to overhaul several legacy air formations of the Indonesian Air Force. As part of this restructuring, the 3rd Air Wing was formally liquidated and transitioned into the 3.2 Fighter Air Wing (Wing Udara 3.2 Tempur) under the newly established 3rd Fighter Group of the Air Force Operations Command. The 3rd Air Wing (and subsequently the restructured 3.2 Air Wing) shares similar insignia as the original 300th Operational Wing, with a very distinct two stylized bird-esque figure. This figure is applied to the tail-end of most of the Air Wing’s combat aircraft.
