Technically, if the missile loses lock, it starts searching for a heat signature. If you flared it but then the missile locked on you, it’s possible that you flared incorrectly or the flare was not enough to deceive it.

I once fired an r73 at a target who didnt even flare it and it then locked on to a different guy that was 8km away, this missile saved my life that game because the guy it decided to go after instead then shot a SARH at me but died to my awol missile before I died
