History

Ōhama class target ship is a bombing target ship of Imperial Japanese Navy completed 1945.

In 1941, IJN planned a high-speed target ship for bombing training. In that time IJN had training ship Settsu (摂津, retired battleship) but speed was only 17.4 knots. In 1943, Hamakatsu (浜勝) was completed but its speed was only 19.3 knots. It was not enough and there are problem of stability.

To solve these issues, They planed Ōhama class in 1943.

Name ship, Ōhama was laid down in October 2, 1943, launched March 29, 1944 and completed in January 10, 1945 at MHI Yokohama dock.

In August 9, she entered Megawa port, Miyagi pref and sunk due to air raid.

Also, sister ship Ōsashi was launched in February 26, 1945 but construction was cancelled in June 23. Ōsashi was sunk in March 6, 1946.

Design

Armor

Target ship of Japanese navy have restrictive armor to prevent training bombs. Boats were stored under protection deck around funnel.

“DS” is a Ducol-steel (structure steel). This armor able to prevent 10 kg training bombs.

Deck armor is 25-22 mm DS, and wall of superstructure is 16 mm DS. Side of hull is 18 mm MS. Layout of armor is shown on drawing below

note: side armor steel are not shown.

Armament

It was designed for bombing target, but due to worsening of war, IJN require ability of escort ship. Because of it, she had very superior AA armaments. (When training, they remove weapons)
Layout of weapons are shown on drawing below. Depth charge rails will be placed on stern.

Note: In this drawing there aren’t depth charge rails, and Mk.13 Radar was installed.

Cons

  • Did not have any torpedoes.
  • Unsatisfactory depth charge equipment.
  • Main caliber gun is only two.

She have speed like a destroyer, and AA armament like a escort ships so she can be good gunboat successor of Syonan!
