HISTORY
ICGV Þór was the very first patrol vessel of the Icelandic coast guard, the ship was built in England by the Edwards Brothers in North Shields and she was launched in 1898 and made ready for use in 1899. It was built for the Icelandic fishing company “Islands Handel & Fiskeri A/S” where it served from 1899 to 1902, when the it was sold to the Danish company “Danish Steam Trawling”. And in 1903 “Danish Ministry for Agriculture and Fishing”, where it served until 1920 when it was given to Iceland and named ICGV Þór, which named after the Norse mythology god Thor “Þór”. Iceland had since the 1920’s paid for its service as a patrol vessel, and in 1926 Iceland decided to buy the vessel, and whit this purchase, the Icelandic Coast Guard was funded.
In its early service years, ICGV Þór was armed with two 57mm quick firing 6 pounder Model 1892 cannon that had been gifted from Denmark. Those were at an later point in time replaced with one single 47mm cannon, which we don’t know the model nor make, but it is highly likely ex British. but we are informed that is is an Model 1909 tough.
During an storm just before Christmas in December 1929, the vessel ran aground in an hefty storm at Húnaflói, and because of this and the damages of the vessel, it was decided to buy a new vessel to replace ICGV Þór
CONCLUSION
This vessel is one of the best candidates to bring an Icelandic vessel to the game, because why not? It is an old vessel and the speed is slow, the armor is neither great, as it is originally an trawler after all. But, with the early configuration we get 2x 57mm fast firing cannon with a 2.4 second reload time, this should make up for its downsides if placed correctly in a tech tree.
