HISTORY
ICGV Óðinn was the third vessel of the Icelandic Coast Guard that carried the name Óðinn, and is therefore technically named Óðinn (3). The ship was built for the Icelandic Coast Guard in 1959 and entered service in the early 1960’s. I have not been able to find out which shipyard built this ship. The vessel originally was armed with 1x 57mm QF 6 pounder Model 1892 cannon that was gifted From Denmark which she used up until 1989 when this cannon was replaced by a 40mm L60 Mk.III Bofors cannon that also had been Gifted from Denmark. The engines in the ship, which are then 2x Burmeister & Wain diesel engines are believed to be the only ones of their kind still in serviceable condition in the world today

Shortly after the ship had been commissioned, as this was in the middle of the Cod War which was a conflict between Iceland and Britain that lasted from 1958 to 1976, the ICGV Óðinn fired two shots at the British trawler Grimsby Town which was believed to be fishing far within Iceland’s territory, and these two shots hit the trawler in the funnel. after this, the British frigate Palliser came towards ICGV Óðinn and prevented them from arresting the trawler. a few years later in 1963, ICGV Óðinn caught the trawler Aberdeen Milwood on 27 April and after a short chase the trawler was brought into Reykjavik. The trawler was released later that year after having to pay a fine of £10,000. Later that year, the ICGV Óðinn was dispatched to assist the British trawler Northern Spray which had run aground off the coast of Iceland. Towards the end of the cod war in 1976, ICGV Óðinn was rammed in the stern by the British trawler Artic Corsair. this was then after ICGV Óðinn had tried three times to cut the trawl wraps.

After the ship was decommissioned in 2006, the ship was donated to Hollvinasamok Óðins later in 2008, and the ship was put on display at the Reykjavík Maritime Museum. It was begun restored in 2014 and was in operational condition in 2020. Also, there is something interesting I have to mention, and that is that ICGV Óðinn was in the film Flags of our fathers that was filmed in Iceland the summer of 2005, where it played a small role.
