Attached are screenshots showing a major spotting issue. I’m being engaged by radar missiles from 7-10 km out, but the launching aircraft stays invisible. I can’t see the target at all, only the incoming missile. Is this a new mechanic or a bug? I’d like to hear from someone on the dev team or a moderator. As a long-time paying player, I find this dynamic completely game-breaking.

You seem to be looking directly in the direction of the sun which would make the detection distance shorter.
A bit longer read:
so why couldn’t I spot a mig-23ml 5km in my direction of sight when i was looking behind me even though my keen vision and awareness was maxed out apart from the expert and ace crew. luckily i spotted him with my own eyes and could call it out to my teammates who were taking off from the airfield since i expended all of my missiles and ammo
Sever replay??? def wana know what stats your crew are at?
I think it’s the pilots direction of sight and not yours, so the pilot can’t look through the floor or back of the plane. i’m a bit uncertain about that though.
It’s also shorter distance to detect things in RB and SIM as well as weather, lighting and other things like that effecting it as well.
Edit:
For my JAS39 planes i have the A aced and the E experted.
This is how the skill looks when the crew is aced:

This is how it looks when the crew is experted:

I wasn’t even looking at the sun. I took plenty of screenshots, but I could only upload four of them. I can also provide the server replay if needed. I couldn’t see this aircraft from any angle; the radar missile appeared out of nowhere, but the plane itself stayed invisible. There is a serious spotting issue in the game. You need to acknowledge this and fix it.
The situation has nothing to do with the sun’s position; there is a much more complex and intricate issue at play here.
If players wanted this kind of experience, the vast majority would just play a full simulation. Since the beginning, the core logic of Air Realistic mode has been based on spotting. If there’s going to be a lack of spotting, then I’d expect my enemies not to be able to see me either
In your first screenshot the enemy is directly straight in the direction of the sun. The sun is just slightly above the enemy. So you will have almost maximum disadvantage to the detection due to the lighting factor.
If you think there is an issue/bug with the game then you can bug report it here (just search a bit first so that you don’t report something that is already reported and known about): (Gaijin.net // Issues)
A guide on how to report bugs can be found here: ([Navigation] Technical Knowledge Base | War Thunder Wiki)
I have zero connection to development. I have no insight into how they work, no influence over what they do and no contact with the developers. I’m just trying to help you understand why this might have happened to you on the level of a normal player.
It does, your pilot wont detect and render in enemy planes he cannot see. The keen vision crew skill directly mentions the distance for detection in the direction of the sun.
If they have the sun in their backs they will be able to spot you much earlier due to the advantage in lighting conditions. This is a game mechanic you can tactically use to your advantage by approaching the enemies from the direction of the sun so that you see them before they see you. This is a actively used real life tactic by pilots, try searching the phrase “Be Aware of The Hun In The sun”.
If you want to change how mechanics in the game works (if they are working correctly and you wish that they work differently) then you can create a suggestion in the suggestion section here on the forum. That section is however pre-moderated and only posts that follow their rules and guidelines will get posted and it can take a couple of weeks for a post to get reviewed for publication. If it gets accepted and made public it then has a chance to get sent to the developers as a suggestion later on.
like how the old wiki is still better than the new one a lot of the time
definitely makes more sense that it is the pilots line of sight and not mine. I was just a bit confused as to why I couldn’t see the aircraft behind me even though he was within detection range. Thnaks for clearing that up.
