I DO need help with AMRAAMs

Basically that and I’m starting to think it’s the missile.

I have been getting into the SIM world and the problem is specifically with BVR. But today was the last straw.

I shot at a target with F-15E using TWS HDN at 10km distance coming straight at me, at about 700m/s, mach 2.5 and the missile missed. Dealing with the fact that most of the time the radar sees absolutely nothing (in any mode), be it 30x5, 60x10, or 120x10. Obvious at over 10 thousand meters altitude. The enemy, a Rafale, didn’t even need to move, or get cold or perpendicular.

This has been happening to me over and over again. Firing an AMRAAM in optimal conditions, nothing. Another nothing. And so 5, 10, 15 AMRAAMs with a 0% success rate.

Of course it also fails when the enemy is multipathing or notching (not well if not with errors), even keeping the TWS lock to guide it via data link. Of course it also failed, and will continue to fail.

Mention “but is that”…, I mean, does the AMRAAM also need me to lead it by the hand to the enemy? Possibly one of the most overrated missiles after a while (that people have become accustomed to notching and multipathing).

I have continued now from a medium range 6-15km away, usually below 4k mts, between 0.8 and 1.2 mach, usually using SRC PD, and of course keeping the lock as much as possible (looks like I was playing some kind of AIM-7F-2 haha). And they keep missing: among the last 30 AMRAAMs I’ve shot only 5 have hit the target.

I need help.

Have you taken a look at the replays? To know if it’s the missile or all the players notching and doing evasive maneuvers (which would surprise me).

I do not play sim much but understand the mechanics.

My first thought would be tone and launch angle. Do you have full tone (like in ARB where you see a white circle, 1 red, 2 red, etc) and effective launch angle to pre-guide missile onto target interception path?

As far as I know, there isn’t two tones like in ARB, you can’t ‘see’ them. (If they are, I’ve played sim very wrong then)

Ye - just double checked it does not show status lock, just on or off. Also did not mean you “physically” see it. More tone indicator - type of beep.

If you zoom in on your HUD and look you will see the radar box trail or lose track and re-track. I usually wait for this to be more “solid” before I fire.
Launch angle X distance X target direction of flight would then be my guess.

Oh, didn’t see that. Thanks.

Didn’t notch, I just think AMRAAM is overrated. That’s all.

They’ll add the AIM-120C-5 for the F-15E, see if the perform better.
