Hyper-Velocity Glide Projectile (Block 1) - Defending distant Island’s…can we still get it ?
Hi and welcome to my 112th suggestion, which is about the Japanese HVGP Block 1, hope you like it.
Background History
On June 8, 2025, Japan’s new hypersonic weapon system, the Hyper Velocity Gliding Projectile (HVGP), was publicly unveiled for the first time during the annual Fuji Comprehensive Firepower Exercise. The system has been under development by the Japanese Defense Acquisition Agency (ATLA) since 2018 and is primarily intended to defend Japan’s southwestern islands against enemy naval task forces.
As part of testing, the HVGP launcher was tested both on a Japanese Navy ship and in a C-2 transport aircraft of the Air Self-Defense Force to evaluate various deployment and operational options. Launch, reloading, and operational procedures, as well as operations in cold weather conditions, were also practiced. According to ATLA, the tests met the required performance criteria.
The first version of the system, Block 1, is designed to engage targets several hundred kilometers away - originally scheduled for introduction in 2029, the program has been accelerated, with initial operational capability now expected as early as 2026. Planned further developments, including Block 2 and Block 2B, are expected to achieve ranges of approximately 2,000 to 3,000 kilometers through improved Ram- and possibly Scramjet technology, while maintaining Hypersonic speeds.

The HVGP Block 1 Overall
Don’t you know those moments in the game when you’d love to sit far outside the map and simply take out all your enemies from a safe distance, without even the anti-aircraft defenses being able to do anything about it?
Now you can!
The Hyper Velocity Gliding Projectile (HVGP) developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries is a hypersonic weapon system capable of reaching speeds exceeding Mach 5, utilizing a gliding trajectory during flight. In its terminal phase, the projectile can maneuver, making it more difficult for enemy missile defense systems to intercept it. The system is primarily designed for precision long-range strikes in the context of island defense.
The first version has an estimated range of about 900 km, while later variants could reach over 3,000 km. Two main versions are currently under development: Block 1, the early operational model with a length of about 7 meters, using a booster derived from the Type 12 SSM missile system - Block 2 is a longer variant, with possibly over 10 meters, an entirely new projectile type which includes a Ramjet, intended to carry a larger payload and reach significantly greater distances. The system is uses fire control and command systems (FCCS), as well as both inertial navigation (IOG) and satellite navigation (GNSS) for high accuracy. The system is primarily intended for deployment in the Kyushu and Hokkaido regions, with the main mission of defending disputed or remote islands in the East China Sea.
The HVGP is launched from a Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Heavy Wheeled Recovery Vehicle Type B (HWRV (B)), same as Type 03 Chū-SAM, equipped with an 371 HP 6MT70T4, reaching a maximum speed of 100 km/h on roads.
