After the communist takeover in Hungary in 1948, its army name was altered from Hungarian Defence Forces to Hungarian People‘s Army in 1951 operating approx. 150 T-34-85s , 68 IS-2s , 50 SU-100s, a couple SU-76s SPGs before putting those to use during the Hungarian 1956 revolution, in which many army members sided with the rebels resulting in a purge in the Hungarian army after its suppression by Soviet forces.
From 1949 to 1956 a roundel marking was applied on the turret sides of the tanks. It also briefly served as the Hungarian Airforce roundel from 1949-1951.
