Hummer H1 (M60)
History
During the later stages of the Yugoslav wars, the Department of State Security (RDB) bought about 50 civilian Hummer vehicles (at that time, the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia was under an embargo, so military HUMMVEs couldn’t be acquired). They were mostly Hummer 1995 H1 pickup trucks with 6.5 TD V8 197hp engines. Upon arriving at Lola Institute, the vehicles were fitted with roll bars, armor around the cargo bed area, and weapon pedestals for mounting a single M2 Browning, a pair of 30mm M93 automatic grenade launchers, or a single 82 mm M60 recoilless rifle. They were then handed over to the Special Operations Unit (JSO) also known as Red Berets and first appeared on film at the JSO parade in Kula in 1997. In 2003, when the JSO disbanded, about twenty vehicles were transferred to the Anti-Terrorist Unit (PTJ). A merging of the unit with the Special anti-terrorist unit (SAJ) in 2016 led to the vehicles being transferred to the SAJ and Serbian Gendarmery, where they remain.
