How would the F14D perform in War thunder?

That folder is already filled with the F-14A (Early) and F-14B. The much more likely situation is that they add Rank 9, and the F-14D, Superhornet, etc… are added as the US naval fighters for Rank 9.

Can’t imagine the F-14D could be anywhere higher than 13.0 unless it gets 9X’ which isnt happening anytime soon afaik, or AMRAAMs. Even then, it would likely struggle vs other jets armed with 5th gen IIR missiles. Its long overdue tbh.

IF it gets the protoype dual AIM-120 rails (and I dont consider the chances of it even getting AMRAAMs at all being anything more than hopium at best, gaijin has proven that they absolutely despise the F-14 and anything marginally related to it), it could go to 14.0 with 9M’s, where it would the worst jet at the BR, as a sidegrade/downgrade to the F/A-18C (Late), but with the russian/chinese superjets at 13.3 now, thats where the F-14D should be with 8x AIM-120’s. Nowhere near “rank 9”.

As for the folder being “filled” there’s no such thing. Folders can have more than 2 vehicles inside, its just not common.

The F-14D, unless given prototype stuff like AIM-120’s, dual AIM-120 rails, and VTAS, is basically just going to be an F-14B with the F-15E radar, so if its not a premium (im thinking its gonna be gaijins new US 13.3 premium “competition” for the Su-30MK2 in the very near future) it should be foldered, as theres literally no good reason for gaijin to make players grind through a minor upgrade to the already optional F-14B.

The German S.M.79s don’t count because they were removed from the game unless you had them already, and the Soviet Ar-2/SB 2 folder only has three vehicles in it. The Soviet Su-2 folder has four in it, but that is the highest I could find in game.

AIM-54C+ was a more upgraded version they made and wanted to deploy, had some stuff from the AMRAAM seeker implemented among other things, but the gooberment decided to toss it in the trash for cost cutting reasons. They retained some of the stuff which was implemented as the ECCM/Sealed variant.

You sure about that? It has a better flightmodel than both of them, better avionics than those of them, and equivalent weaponry to them for the foreseeable future.
For example: The only things besides HMD the F-15E and F/A-18C have over the F-14D are these:

Hornet C Late: AoA Ability, 2 more ARH missiles, (Gun Placement??)
Strike Eagle: Just Pure speed

I think you’re confusing the F-14B with the F-14D. The F-14B is the minor upgrade. The F-14B brought New engines, a couple new sensors, and “New” Missiles. The F-14D replaces the engine upgrade for actual new weapons, vastly better avionics suites, and vastly improved additional sensors. Not to even mention the QoL for Sim, or the DFCS which should make the F-14D handle much better at what it previously lacked at.

• On the deck, better STR, loses in ITR. At alt, pretty sure the F-15E beats it in every way in-game, but the F/A-18C is worse simply due to being slow.
• F-15E has the speed and accel advantage in all regimes.

FM-wise, id say its a toss-up between the 3, all 3 have their pros and cons, but the 14B is a contender in that regard.

Sorta, but not really. APG-71 is just gonna be a copy paste APG-70. They might give it more range which will have literally 0 use in WT, thats about it, and the APG-65 does just fine as well. Id say its technically true but functionally irrelevant.

“Besides the HMD” is downplaying one of the most major advantage the other 2 have…

Not really, itd be fighting the J-11A/Su-30MK2 with 6x assorted 27ER/ET or RVV-AE’s + 4xR-73 WITH HMD. Would also be fighting stuff like JAS-39A (no fox 3, but delta duck FM + HMD), and F-16A variants (6x AMRAAMs but vastly superior FM). Fits in just right with the other twin engine 4th gen jets, trades off better avionics for no HMD basically.

You’re vastly overstating how big a deal the F-14D is compared to the F-14B in WT. The avionics and sensors will be better, but it’ll still be otherwise the same jet. You can just look at the F-15C vs the F-15CGE for a look at what that looks like. F-15C is 13.7, F-15CGE is 14.3 (with a bunch of ppl saying it shouldnt be a 14.3).

Theres also the compression issue to consider, with the difference between 13.0 (gen 3.5 jets with fox 3’s or gen 4 with bad fox 3’s) and 13.3 (4th gen with fox 3’s and/or HMD) being signficantly larger than the difference between the next few steps

• 13.7 have good fox 3 + HMD + working avionics (13.3 lack 1 of the 3 components, which is exactly what an AMRAAM armed F-14D is)
• 14.0 are 13.7’s with slightly better FM’s
• 14.3 are 14.0 but have either vastly better avionics or vastly better FM’s (except the Rafale, which is a 15.3 waiting for gaijin to stop sucking the french mains off)

13.3 is where the F-14D belongs imo, pretty much regardless of getting 8x AMRAAMs or not. 6-8x AMRAAMs will mean itll be a competitive 13.3, no AMRAAM’s will mean itll be a bottom of the barrel 13.3. Could make a case it belongs at 13.7 with 8x AMRAAM’s, but the lack of HMD is killing it at that point imo.

New cockpit and better radar will be quite nice for sim, but its a pretty small playerbase, and at 13.7 itd only be worth playing 1/4 of the time when 13.7 is top tier. Otherwise it will get violated by all the 14.3 jets.

This isnt gonna be modelled. They’ll copy paste the F-14B FM and then tell you to kick rocks anytime you try to bug report it. Thats been their MO with the F-14 ever since the jet was added to the game.

I love the F-14, but lets be realistic. Its well past its prime in-game, and gaijins track record of abject hatred for the jet aint doing it any favours either. 13.3 premium is almost guaranteed what it’ll be, and they probs still wont give it AMRAAM’s or the Rafale treatment of getting an HMD it shouldnt have.

It’s not actually an APG-70 series radar though. It’s digital elements like radar modes and processing just share an 85% commonality rate. The actual power of the radar is still the AWG-9, which is double of peer radars on average. It also would immediately get the best IRST in the entire game to back that radar up. And with the possible new Air mode coming out that’s supposed to have bigger maps and objectives like strategic bombers, the range could be useful too.

I do the same with the 13.0 BR F-14B and I honestly don’t have trouble against them. Just don’t get too close. With the IRST this will be even easier, as I can send a Phoenix or AMRAAM at them and they won’t know until it’s pitbull. Gripen A and F-16As aren’t a threat unless you’re trying to dogfight them, which shouldn’t be happening as you’re faster than them and have every advantage in the book outside of 3km.

Eh. The F-2 doesn’t have HMD but it’s still one of the best 13.7s. Like the Tomcat, it’s vertical ACM is serviceable. And the F-14D trades 2x IR for 4x ARH compared to it.

I doubt it’ll have a big impact on performance if they didn’t even bother on making a performance manual for it separately. It’ll still handle like a Tomcat, especially for AirRB purposes.

Functionnaly in-game, itll likely get the same scan zones as the APG-70 and the range/power advantage is irrelevant in WT. So itll effectively be an APG-70.

For some reason, i doubt the IRST from the 1990’s stacks up to the IRST’s from the ones seen on newer jets, but even if you were right, IRST does nothing of value in air RB, and has niche use in SB.

AWG-9 (PD HDN with bad scan angles) vs APG-71 (all aspect PD with mediocre scan angles)
