Im looking over the internet but I cant really understand how the SAS modes works.
I know we have 3 modes:
1 - Manual: Which I blieve means “off”
2 - Dumping: That I believe that prevents High G manouvering and Stall shakes and stuff
3 - Automatic Leveling: Should this automatic level the plane to the horizon?
Please, feel free to correct me in the above if I misunderstood.
So my question is:
Why the Automatic leveling mode, put the nose down in the planes, instead of leveling it?
Usin as example my favorite dorito, the Kafir Canard and my second most loved dorito, the Milan
Whenever I turn the Automatic leveling on, the plane just goes nose down and start decending. Also, the trims does not work whenever SAS is on (I believe is expected, however its a bit weird since the plane goes nose down…)
I’m fairly sure it makes the plane level with the horizon, but it doesn’t account for any alt gain/decent when doing so. It leads to situations where the plane is level, but is on a downward trajectory.
Yes, it looks like the “autopilot” simply aims the plane at the horizon, without taking into account the angle of attack. Also turning on SAS blocks the use of trimmers.
It just keeps your wings level. Doesnt handle pitch anymore than Damping does. (at least I think thats the case)
Trim doesnt work at all in SAS mode. (though personally feel that maybe it should or that there should be a mode in which it does work)
My personal use of SAS Mode. I leave it in Damping most of the time and only really use Automatic leveling when im doing a high altitude bomb run using CCRP in something like a Buc, Tornado, or Jaguar where keeping my wings level is a benefit.
This is broken right now. I can’t remember if there is any bug report about it.
For example automatic leveling works very well in every British Harrier.
You can use trim with dampening or automatic leveling in Su-25 (I guess all variants) or A-10C with dampening (roll only).
