How to play the Prinz Eugen?

I’m new to naval so if any Captains can help me here, I am forever in debt to your service. I got the Prinz Eugen but I need to know

  1. Main difference of when to use apbc vs SAP against heavy or light.
  2. How much ammo in the main and secondary to bring.
  3. Where to position on the map (I keep dying by rushing in, I know this is not how to play.)
  4. I saw some online stuff saying to play as a sniper, what range in miles should I stay away from the enemy?
  5. Any other tips can you provide other than angling which I’m already trying to do as well as the scouting and torpedo stuff.

20.3 SAP will maul most ships you will see barring battleships and battlecruisers. AP is mainly for armored targets or targets you can reliably snipe the ammunition on.

I usually go half SAP and half AP for my primary, pure SAP for my secondaries. Hipper plays almost exactly the same as Eugen.

Depends on the map but magazine 4 is exposed, you generally want to keep angled or at least hide your stern as best you can in an engagement. As for role, mid-line support if you’re top tier, opportunist if you’re in an unfortunate uptier. You’re going to be focused almost immediately just because you’re a Hipper class so knowing what’s firing at you is important. As well as evading.

I stopped playing in miles a while ago but the Eugen and Hipper excel at about 10 to 12km. Which is about 6.2 to 7.5 miles ish. The AP can punch well above their weight, allowing a cheeky kill on battlecruisers like the Ikoma, Glorious - and if you’re really lucky - the Von der Tann.

Do not underestimate the power of a scoutplane - it can see things you may not see like PT boats beyond your third person vision range on-ship.

It can also cap points without sacrificing your ship and drop smokescreens for breaking LoS.

German torpedoes - the G7As - are 6km before torpedo mode but they’re not very fast even beforehand. Of you can get away with using them against an enemy ship, by all means but they’re inconsistent on heavy armor targets like Battlecruisers and Battleships

Thanks for the reply. In arcade, how do i aim for the hull? I realize my shots are going through without causing much damage. I think its mainly because im aiming too high and using ap on light cruisers. Also is there a good way of knowing who’s shooting at you? I look in the general direction of the hit indicator but only see like 2-3 ships firing in my general direction.

If you’re being shot at from long range, you can use the smoke from your smokestacks (moving the camera) to better see incoming rounds.

If someone hit you, you can tap J to see the name (DO NOT HOLD BECAUSE YOU’LL SUICIDE AFTER HOLDING FOR 3 SECONDS) of the person who last hit you. … Because the devs didn’t think that telling you who gets the kill if you do couldn’t be abused.

As for aiming; It’s finnicky. Aiming waterline means you have to contend with the armor belt and even water. Aiming too high you end up going through superstructure. Ship listing (the tilt of the ship, usually during a turn) also affects accuracy.

Easiest solution if you know someone is sailing flank ahead is aim towards the stern; players almost always dodge by flank speed turning and 9 times out of 10 will always get caught if they turn too late.

Arcade may be ‘baby mode aiming’ but there’s so many ways to use AI gunner behavior - and ship listing behavior - to your advantage much to the annoyance of other players to make you annoyingly hard to kill.

Edit

For example - we’ll use HMS dido - during a normal high speed turn, Dido lists pretty heavily which exposes her keel and sets up for a fairly easy ammunition snipe if someone knows how to aim.

By forcing enough of a turn in one direction to force a list and then immediately going the opposite, they now have to go through angled deck armor plus potentially turrets and even ammo elevators, thus preventing a potential ammo explosion.

However; this is not a full proof strategy as AP with enough penetration can still go through.

alright thanks for your help, I will tryout what you told me.

It takes a bit of practice and ship behavior is different for each ship. Just know if you fight a Dido you’re functionally immune to it until roughly 6km where it can start getting through your armor belt.

Where you go also depends on the map and a battleship or battlecruiser will try to remove you asap just because you exist. Don’t be afraid to delay spawning in immediately to give yourself a little bit of a chance.

I will try to stay behind my teammates. Maybe even using islands as cover so try to flank. Oh also one more question. Should I spread my gunfire on multiple targets or try killing one ship at a time to maximize SL? I know the new update changed how damage is rewarded.

That ultimately depends if the ship is a ‘threat’. For example; an Emden might be a juicy target since it’s easy to kill but there just so happens to be a Fargo within range which is a considerably bigger threat.

In that situation, I’d almost immediately focus the Fargo just because it exists.

Alternatively, I could just do 50% of the Emden’s crew, get a severe damage and risk the Fargo doing american cruiser things at nearly 700 to 900rpm.

It doesn’t help that some maps (DENMARK) are heavily biased towards one team.

So get rid of the kids first. When a parent shows up, slap the kid then focus on the adult. Got it.

Bit more complicated than that. Risk assessment is important.

Yes, you could prey on lower tier ships but you could also deal with ships that are actually a threat which will keep them from snowballing your own team in the process.

I personally try to go after the biggest threats that I can reliably kill. Oddly, that tends to be American cruisers at 5.7 to 6.3 and anything IJN.

but that runs the risk of a krasny krym potentially steamrolling my team (which has happened) because nobody can oddly kill the last 20% of its crew since they’re all slinging low to medium caliber SAP.

I’d like to mention that none of this is stuff you should take as ‘100% accurate, no flaws’. Mileage may vary and while I’m fairly consistently top 4 on my team in games, I consider myself average at best - There’s bound to be someone that knows things better than I do.

Yeah, I’m just scared of targeting the heavy guys as that leads to them targeting me and then one-shotting me. I’m sure I will get to your level the more matches I play.

If you can get a few teammates to help concentrate fire on a battleship, you’ll be surprised how fast one can die.

Battleship armor honestly doesn’t start getting into ‘literally unkillable for 3 to 4 cruisers’ until around 6.3 where you can start seeing the Kongou, Haruna and Kirishima.

Alternatively you can respawn in a Graf Spee and have everyone immediately focus you because they have PTSD from pre-Leviathans Scharnhorst. Same guns.
