After finally grinding to my first 11.7 tank, I reach the Challenger 2, and it feels like the play style I learnt and became accustomed to by playing the Challenger 1s and Cheiftans (sniper/ ambush tank) has been thrown out the window. I really want to finish the Britain tree, but it feels like a mountain to climb with how poorly i’am doing with the Challenger 2, especially in how most games are full uptiers against 12.7 tanks. Any help in how to play this tank would be great.
Do your best to be at the strategic points denpend on each map (not cap points) and shoot the enemy.
Don’t ever show your hull or peak wide corridors.
What has been thrown out? It plays similar to those like the MK.10. You’re not an aggressive tank like the Soviet MBTs you’ll face. Sit back and use your superior gun depression to pick off targets. I was just looking at what tanks you’ve been using in your sessions. Looks like you’re not using the Chally 2 as part of a lineup. This is a mistake. There are just maps where Chally 2 is just ill-suited. Grind out support vehicles. Britain is very strong when it comes to SPAA around those BR, too. Don’t just rush up the tree.
Your just up against more advanced tanks and players. Dont carry lots of ammo, i carry 14 L27A1 and thats it, thats only first stage + 1 other armoured bin full of ammo. Much less chance of dying from a shot to the lower plate.
The game doesn’t really suit what the tank is made to do in real life. Its made for hull down in a tree line miles away but you cant really do that in game. Best way to use it is to snipe, flank, and ridge on a small hill where you sit behind a hill or mound, drive to the top, shoot using its great gun depression, reverse back down and repeat. Or, on bigger maps sniping enemies, especially if you can flank and get them on their way from spawn to the cap points.
You just have to either camp or flank.
At long range shots, the L27A1 is really nice and you might not feel good in the tank until you have it spaded out. The Black Night and 2E variants are best, use the 2E speed to flank, use the BN to not get helicoptered mid or late game, the TES is good for late game anti-auto cannons.
I wish I had better news to give you but with the current state of the Challenger the best thing is to kind of sit there. Since a lot of maps are Call of Duty style CQB maps and you frequently match against objectively better nations (Germany+Russia+China) it can honestly be a valid strategy to set up in a spot near your teams spawn; generally the enemy team will be in it in about 2-5 minutes. Typically your opponent isn’t going to expect anyone actually guarding back points, spawns or lanes leading to the battle. This gives you an opportunity to surprise them and play a supporting role.
Another thing that sort of helps me when I’m considering pushing or taking a shot is to take the stats for your shell and armour, then divide them in half. That’s closer to the actual performance that you can expect out of them.
I’m being a little hyperbolic but this is kind of what it is like to play any of the off-meta MBT’s, not just Challenger. Just play really conservatively and don’t try to go toe to toe with the semi-fictional giga-wunderwaffe that you’ll frequently be fighting.
