How to kill a Boat in Naval

Hi, ive been struggeling to kill ships on long ranges, and in short ranges, were do i need to shoot to kill?

As a general rule of thumb, aim below the turrets, as this maximises your chances of hitting an ammo rack. Usually the forward turrets, but there are exceptions like Prinz Eugen where aiming for the rear is best

and hwo do i get kill on long ranges?

Depends what you are using and what you are fighting. General rule of thumb is if you cant pen them, either switch to a lighter target or rinse them with what ever shell has the most HE filler to kill crew and start fires.

I don’t have any experience in it but I would say go for CLs and DDs, us the APHE on the CLs and HE on the DDs, USA ones have anti frag armour so you may need to use APHE on them too. Also a lot of USA DDs have a very vulnerable shell room for the aft guns like what @Morvran mentioned, hit those and pop goes the weasel. avoid trading fire with BBs and CBs at all costs and engage CAs as a last resort or in self-defenses only, try APHE, if it doesn’t pen the Barbette (the column the gun sits on) try for the secondary guns, if that doesn’t work just try to burn them with HE.

I found “Ranging Fire” to be very, very effective.

I bound it to control and send shots about 0.5 seconds apart with slight displacement left/right (and slightly adjusting range as well) to cover a greater area intentionally around where tank/boiler room/racks are and increase chances of hitting fuel tank/ammo/boiler room.

Practice. It’s really hard to explain. I’ve been playing naval for a while and I still sometimes struggling hitting things past 11-12km

A lot of that depends on the type of ship too, this is totally empirical, but I’m sure “bigger” ships have a longer range before the accuracy of their range finding falls off, DDs/ CLs have a hard time over 8 to 10km, Yamato, despite her other problems, is fairly accurate until 20km where the range finger decides to move in 1km increments.

what about this radar?

What do you want to kill?

Ships (post)

Oh my bad, ships like light cruisers and destroyers

Actually I think that is dependent on the range finder and less so the calibre. I dont think most British Cruiser have drop off until then either.

But… bigger guns usually require way less lead at range

I use exclusively AP or SAP from all ships except for those with VT fuses - for them I carry a few VT and everything else SAP/AP/Common.

At about 3" I carry all VT if available even when the guns are the primary armament.

With boats I normally use the default ammo for auto cannon (normally 1/2 AP 1/2 HE). For boat guns (eg 85 & 76mm on Soviet river gunboats) I use AP.

Seems to work OK.

Otherwise, as others have said, it is “just” a matter of hitting.
2 specific “tips”:
1/ Longer ranges mean targets have more opportunity to change course/speed - so pay attention to what your target is going and adjust aiming point as necessary to try to hit 10-20 seconds from now

2/ Use ranging fire so not all your guns are shooting at once. The game gives choice of shooting by turret or by gun. Using the ranging shot function means you don’t miss with an entire salvo - conversely you don’t hit with an entire salvo at once either, but IMO it gives a better chance of getting some hits on a manouvering target - I use it for almost everything that has more than 1 slow firing gun as the main armament right down to the river gunboats

This. I’m in equal measures amazed and relieved that so few players opt for sequential firing, giving the number of advantages it bestows. It truly proved to be a game changer ever since I switched to this many years ago.

Stick to APHE shell, Italian HE shells usually aren’t that good (you can look at the amount of explosives to understand that). Also I would recommend not to carry too many ammunition, find out the amount you usually spend in the battle (I choose depending on the battle time).
Try both arcade and realistic modes, they have different aiming systems. I prefer realistic mode, it also doesn’t have speed boosts and torpedoes/missiles replenishment is only at strategic points.
There is also survival system, you can use automatic or manual (in settings), priority should be fire extinguishing (I’m honestly just using automatic with fire-water-repair, even if it gives me disadvantages compared to manual).
