Hi, I’ve been playing for around 3 years and feel like i’m a bad player. I keep trying to ask players what the average is for things like K/D, time until you get decent, and time until you reach top tier, but everyone says “it depends”. I am a free to play player and just want some numbers to see how I stack up. I feel like a pretty bad player because I doubt it’s normal for someone who has 3 years experience to only reach 8.0 br. I don’t know how to get better other than playing more (which I already do daily), watching tons of tutorials, and being smart. I’ve already asked for help so many times and have tried nearly everything but nothing helps. I’ve even had experienced players try to tutor me but they all ended up giving up on me and kicking me out of their discord servers for being too bad.
But anyways, I don’t know how to check total hours played in the game, but according to a friend who has some War Thunder stats bot, I have played a total of 551 hours of actual in game time, and I have a K/D of around 0.3. My War Thunder player profile thing puts me at 7148 total ground battles with a time of 404 hours in ground. Note that I used to play arcade in my first year until I discovered realistic and have been in there ever since (for 2 years now). Again, idk how good this is compared to the average, but I usually end up at the bottom of the team standings when a match ends, and I often run out of SL meaning I get limited by repair costs rather than me having time to play. This forces me to play at lower tiers until basically every vehicle in my tech tree is broken and I can’t pay for any of the repairs lol. People in chat keep telling me I suck and that I should uninstall, but after hundreds of hours (Steam says like 1200 hours!!!) I can’t do that.
I’m just lost because War Thunder is my favourite game but I just feel like I’m terrible. It can’t possibly be normal to only be at 8.0 germany ground with a 0.3 k/d and always broke after 3 years of almost daily playing, right?
I played other techtrees, I got to know my opponents.
I binded a botton for the rangefinder. And the distance adjusting on the sight.
I focus on the objective. You don’t brainlessly go on it, you search for a spot where you can see onto it, or better, a place where you can see the path where the enemy has to pass if it want’s to go to the objective. After you managed to clear the way, you take the objective.
Once taken, Set up ambushes near the objective: If you don’t move they might not hear you, this way you can get a few kills, and also prevent loosing the objective.
I find audiowise extremly distracting my team around. Try to find the distance where they don’t deafen you with their engine noises, but they can still help you in your need.
Don’t drive in front of enemies, if they are looking at you. You might think your armor will save you, but even if it could, (Which past 8.0 not really a thing btw) they always can take out your gun.
Try to enjoy the game, and not focus on the grind. Overstressing just makes you perform worst, and it’s make you loose focus. Just try to get Godmode from time to time in the 1.0 Howitzer. Knowing that you play a far inferior tank, tends to sharpen senses.
Overall the Survivibilety onion.
Don’t be seen. = Be a rat, Spookston is a perfect rat, if you want to lern from somewhere.
If seen, don’t be shot. = Never rely on your armor, eycept if you know for a fact, that your enemy can’t hit you.
If shot, don’t be penetrated. Yeah If you rely on this you, might do this wrong. You sometimes can bait shots, but that is very situational.
That said, I’m an awarage player as well, so some of my advices might be flawed.
I only recently reached top tier, and I have twice as many battles as you. It’s a looooong journey.
Thanks for the tips! I do practice everything that you mentioned though, but even with that I’m still terrible. I have watched Spookston’s videos but they just make me feel bad because whenever I try his tips out I always get destroyed before even seeing an enemy.
if u play GRB, expect the grind to be extremely slow and painful.
if u play ARB, u may reach toptier in 1 year being free-to-play (i reached my first Su-27 as F2P in 1 year without just some GE spent to buy SL since i didn’t want to wait more time).
also expect to have a low K/D if u have that amount of hours in the game (i have almost 3000hs, lmao), u are still new in the game and, as many have told u, it depends.
playing for too long isn’t going to make u an unstoppable death machine, it just says how many time u have been playing WT.
don’t care a sh*t about what people tells u, if u suck it’s ok, nobody installed War Thunder knowing how to kill a Maus or how to notch a MICA-EM at 3km.
idk how i could help u, but whatever just play and enjoy the game, WT rewards patience, not skill.
Spookston just plays 36 matches and uploads 3 to YT but with random comentary and saying “WOOW THAT TIGER’S TURRET FLEW OFF SO HIGH! HE MUST HAVE CARRIED AMMO FOR THE WHOLE TEAM”, he’s not a good example.
Well you certainly have a point, maybe his older videos were slightly better on this regard. I would still argue, that mimicking his playstile, and keepeng a track what spots he tends to use, is still can be useful.
As a general rule, YouTubers videos are likely cherry-picked, however you can still learn tactics from the games they do win. If they cannot seem to get a good game to show, and they upload a miserable experience, the vehicle likely has some severe drawback you need to work around, so take that into mind
u can barely learn something if most of their games are cutted/edited. raw gameplay is what usually matters more and useful commentary talking about the upsides and downsides of the tank the YTber is playing is also a good feature.
i follow a mexican YTber (since i speak spanish) who has a bunch of long videos (around 30/40/50min each one) where he plays the vehicle in a certain way, without cuts, and even giving historical information about the vehicle (which is useless in war thunder but it’s good to see somebody so interested in a vehicle).
he even started a new series called “rehabilitando mancos” (“rehabilitating the one-armed/disabled” idk how to say it in english) where he plays joins to Discord with the player his trying to help get better in WT and explains him what to do and what to don’t do. https://www.youtube.com/@nuevomxg/featured
just turn on subtitles or smth, or if u know spanish just watch the video. they are SUPER boring, but it’s the best u can do if u want to know how to play a vehicle like u could get a nuke while being blind.
eh tbh who cares if your good or shit. its a game. just play to have fun, as for the being broke thing. unfortunately that is the downsides of free to play in this game. you make way less SL and RP, and its easy to lose money or make no money per match. If you are able to afford it if there is one thing i do recommend for WT its prem time. its a pretty good price when its on sale and it effects all of your vehicles.
ok so i have a major skill issue with air then lol. I keep seeing people say the air grind is was easier and fuck that has not been my experience lol. I can do like 2 matches before im bored out of my mind. I rely on events to give me high tier cas lol
it’s extremely ez to play since in ARB u only have 1 live, so u don’t have to grind 3 vehicle to do good in a match, and u can max ur crew skills way faster.
