The R-73 is a good missile, but I’m having trouble with high speed attacks.
To me, it seems not as flexible as the Magic 2.
The magic 2 will quickly zoom to the target even in less than ideal shots.
The R-73 has TVC but it’s TVC kills all energy it has, turning the missile into a glorified SRAAM (okay, much better than that but you get the idea)
I’ve missed side shots at like 2km that magic 2 would surely hit, because the R-73 insists on turning 90 degrees to the right which kills all energy it has.
Finally…if you ask, yes, I am using Mig-21 bison with its high AOA and HMS.
So what are some tips to maximize my chance of hits?
Engagements at < 3,0 km at best, < 3,5 km if everything is in your favor, it works great at close ranges but I understand that MiG-21 Bison is no dogfighter but keep that in mind.
Use it top/rear aspect from up to 2.5km on a target that doesn’t notice you.
1.0-1.5km rear aspect if they are flying defensive in full after burner, fire in between flares. The R-73’s IRCCM has a shrinking FOV meaning at such close distances its practically impossible to be flared off once its launched as long as the engine is it view.
