I’ve recently unlocked the MiG-21 MF in the German tech tree but I’m so confused on it’s playstyle and I just don’t know how to use it well. I almost have the R-60’s which from my understanding is only really good in manoeuvrability and the R-3Rs are really bad (at least in how I use them). I used to climb really high and I try and use the R-3R’s in a head on engagement but that never worked very well for me. So I’ve began just staying near the floor trying to scout out someone who I know doesn’t have chaff but most of the time my missiles never really hit and in the end most off my kills are gun kills from dogfights. I just don’t know where this thing really fits into Air battles and where I should use them.
climbing high for an r-3r shot is risky because the target can just go below you and the ground clutter will make them useless.
i’d recommend shooting targets above you with them instead
R-3Rs: launch them between 1 and 2 Km head on, or at really slow targets. They’re just radar guided AIM-9Bs, they won’t pull for anything. R-60s are okay i guess, use them on unaware targets, launch within 3 Kms, but lesser than 2 is optimal.
MiG21MF is one of the best plane at this br. I love this plane. Tactic is easy if you are fully upgrade. Take 1 R-3R and 3 r60s. Go to 3-4 km altitiude or higher as possible but without “chemitrails” (i dont know how its named, you know white smoke from your engine at high altitude. This will help you to stay unspotted as long as possible. A lot of peaoples dont know how to read radar). If you got your posiotion go fast as possible and try spot enemy planes. You will be meatnig a lot of afks so its easy first kill. Go head on with planes at your altitude or try kill planes above you using R-3R. Lock and shoot max from 1km. Best distance is 700-800m but you have to deal with enemy guns. After you shoot R3R try find biggest groupe of enemy. Fly high and when they fight with your team go sneaky behind ther back and use R60. Try to lock and wait until enemy shoot his missile or start using gun. Mostly then they are focused at the target not at their back. Max range to shoot is 1.5km. R60 are fast but only in short period of time. And last most importnant thinks - never go to turn fight againts anything exept other migs21. If you are good ad turnfight you can event try fight with 21bis cuz a lot of pilots do overshoot and then you have your chance to kill him. If somebody is on your back you just turn on your afterburner and say godbye enemy. Go high and noboby can catch you.
Ground clutter is ineffective at 9-10km.
