Interesting, but not exactly surprising, that Naval is the only mode where AB is more popular than RB.
Naval AB is basically my main mode. I don’t play Naval RB.
@Smin1080p_WT or @Stona_WT , if I can ask anything, what motivated the developers to change the sinkability model and Arcade aiming systems, and were players consulted as part of this?
I don’t understand, why they simply won’t add a current correction text to your crosshair. For example, when you select a target and then move the mouse up or down it would show you the correction, something like this:
It would make aiming easier, because you wouldn’t have to calculate that -0.3 km in your head anymore, it would simply be shown there.
But the bigger problem is that there are a few issues with the mouse distance correction arcade system. It worked much better a few years ago, before the devs added some “helpers” that made this system less intuitive.
First, there is a bug where sometimes when you select a target, your guns are not zeroeing to the target distance properly, so you have to make additional correction for this bug. Example of this bug:
Even if my guns should be set to 6.84 km, they are actually set to 6.95 km. I can’t even correct this with the scroll wheel, because with arcade aiming the scroll wheel doesn’t work. This bug was added to Naval Arcade in the “Apex Predators” update more than two years ago, and it’s still not fixed! This makes aiming less intuitive, as you have to look at the numbers whole the time (even if the target stands still). Before this bug I rarely looked at numbers, I basically learned to move my mouse to make specific distance correction by feeling. With this bug it’s impossible to do this anymore and this bug complicated my life a lot. And since it complicated even my life (I play Naval for years), I understand why new players have problems with setting the correct distance.
There was also a change that made small distance correction by moving mouse up or down much harder, sometimes even impossible. A few years ago the devs added a “sticky” system (I don’t know how to call it), where your guns are trying to “stick” to the target automatically if you place your mouse very close to the target. For example, let’s say the enemy is at 10.50 km, and you want to shoot at 10.60 km. The devs added the system that if you move your mouse up very slightly, the game will think that you actually want to shoot directly at the target, you are just imprecise with your mouse, so the game will correct that 10.60 km to 10.50 km for you. Sometimes this system doesn’t allow you to shoot at targets that very slowly extend the distance from you. I understand they wanted to help Arcade players by adding this system (so you don’t have to be very accurate with your mouse cursor), but this effect is too strong and it causes more issues than it actually helps, because you don’t have a full control over that correction when cursor is very close to the target after this helper was added to the game.
But these problems were added by the devs themselves. I actually liked aiming system much more a few years ago, it made more sense, even if you had to be more precise with your mouse movements than these days.
Unfortunately, adding completely automatic aiming system sounds like a joke to me. It will take all the skill away from players and turn this game mode into “hold the left mouse button”. Accurate aiming is the only fun for me in Naval Arcade currently, because the whole game mode has so many problems, mainly balancing and +/-1.0 BR matchmaker that simply doesn’t work. The difference of 1.0 BR vessels in Naval is much bigger than in any other game mode. It’s either you eat them (in downtiers) or they eat you (in uptiers). And I’m not even mentioning many more bugs that make Naval very frustrating at times.
I still don’t understand who is their target audience with this change. It’s definitely not WoW or similar games players, because they all have to lead (automatic aiming will be weird and too simplified for those players). I read somewhere that mobile games have automatic aiming systems, but they are mobile games, you don’t use mouse there. I don’t think players who play mobile games will switch to War Thunder. We will see, but I think this change may actually kill Naval Arcade. Which is surprising, because Naval Arcade is the more popular game mode. The bigger problem is that Naval Realistic isn’t more popular. It would make more sense to change this game mode to attract more players (unless they think that all the current Naval Arcade players will switch to Naval Realistic, so they won’t lose any players with this change, but it would be naive to think this way).
BTW: Maybe they just don’t care about losing current Naval Arcade players. But looking at the numbers Bruce showed on the screenshot (assuming they are accurate), this change will affect many more players than I thought. Potentially ruining the entire mode by changing something as fundamental as the aiming system could actually cost them dearly.
The updated hit effects look really nice but smoke is still severely lacking in how it should behave, I really dislike that it is a static blob that doesn’t sway or slowly dissipate with the wind.
I am really intrested to see where this goes as this can lead to some intresting effects down the road, my question is will this apply to bombs and depthcharges (unless they are and ive never noticed). It would have been nice to see more of this talked about on the dev server this is a really neat mechanic
I shouldn’t have to switch to a new mode that I’ve played for years with thousands upon thousands of games, because they made it brain dead for new players who will quickly become bored as well.
Please revert at least the naval aiming changes. I’m willing to try the damage model changes, with the caveat that it can be removed if people don’t like. However, literally no one asked for an aiming change in naval or for it to be dumbed down to the point that you are no better than a bot.
Who, internally, pushed for this? Why weren’t players consulted? Do you even play your own game? We’ve asked for many fixes, changes to mechanics, and other things that are ignored, and you come up with this garbage. How about going through the years of bug reports and fixing those instead? How about map redesign? How about some compelling new game modes? Literally anything but this!
They’ve only listed those 3 for some reason, but its actually coming to a fair few. Aircraft I checked and saw it was there included the Tornado F3, Sea Harrier FA2 and Typhoon. But their list is always slightly telling when it comes to which they consider important
By far one of the worst changes made to naval, nobody plays realistic so you’re going to alienate what’s left of us in arcade? I don’t want to play realistic OR arcade now, thanks guys.
To add to things- why are my comments constantly getting flagged? Is it because I am calling for the devs to actually involve themselves with the community? Seems like only mine are getting flagged too. Same happened to my original post in the changelog, that was very well received and liked by other naval players.
Submarines should be fine, as you won’t really use their guns, they will be pretty much all about torpedoes. Unless the next devs idea will be to add automatic torpedo aiming: you just point your cursor at the enemy ship, press space and the correction will be made automatically.
It’s possible they will add something like this in the future, because guns and torpedoes will use different aiming systems (you don’t lead with guns anymore, but still lead with torpedoes) in the same game mode, which will be weird. I’m not sure how other weapons like rockets, mortar and hedgehog will work. This actually could be very confusing with mixed aiming systems.
This is overall pretty phenomenal news, but I’m not sure I like the aiming lead/distance being automatically adjusted for boats and ships in NAB.
Also, the new smoke/dirt impact effects dissipate too quickly, and the craters should alter the terrain while taking into account the impact angle.
There are a bunch of additional improvements I really hope to see implemented in the future. Things like:
*Functional launch catapults and jet blast deflectors for modern carriers.
*Plane/heli landing gears that turn left/right.
*Updated torpedo aiming reticle for planes.
*Naval Battle Hi-res Texture Pack.
*Input modifiers for key binds (e.g. tap; press; hold; double-tap; activate on depress, etc.).
*Option to disable auto level/roll as well as option to enable chase camera roll for plane/heli mouse aim controls.
*Camos for shipboard reconnaissance aircraft match when they’re stationed on the ship’s launch catapult to when they’re deployed.
*Yellow HUD ID markers for both the player’s drone & tank/plane & ship when deployed.
*Cockpits for shipboard reconnaissance aircraft, and the ability to select camo, fuel load, ammo belt, bomb fuse time, etc.
*Shipboard reconnaissance aircraft can return to its ship to dock, repair, rearm, and refuel.
*Either replace GAB’s current flyout event system with NAB’s aircraft gameplay system (preferable, IMO), OR fix both team’s aircraft spawn positions so player’s aren’t taking fire from their six as soon as they spawn in, add the option to cancel joining a flyout event (slot would be freed up for a teammate to fill), allow players to enable the option to have the nation of their flyout event aircraft match the nation of the tanks they’re driving.
*Fully detailed and functional heli cockpit gunner views.
*Functional lights and horns for vehicles, as well as folding wings/rotary blades for the appropriate planes/helis.
There are a bunch of other suggestions I’ve had in mind, but I better stop here. I’m already getting carried away. 😅
Hey hey hey now, the new french coastal vessels will be a pretty decent addition to my arsenal. La Surprise itself has already gone up to my 6th most used vehicle :P
