HISTORY
During the summer of 1940 the Norwegian navy seized 16 Norwegian whaling boats in South Africa. they were taken to Halifax in Canada for conversion into patrol vessels. the whaleboats proved to be in such poor condition that extensive repair work had to be started at the same time as the rebuilding. 7 of these whaleboats were therefore sent to Great Britain for conversion to minesweepers, and the rest were converted to patrol vessels. KOS XX/HNoMS Moldewas one of those that was converted into a patrol vessel, and which you will hear about here. I would like to suggest a whale boat that was requisitioned by the Norwegian navy after the German invasion of Norway. This vessel was armed and used as a patrol vessel throughout the war.
This vessel was built in 1936 with the name KOS XX by Smith’s Dock, South Shield, Middlesbrough for the Whaling company Kosmos A/S (Anders Jahre A/S), Sandefjord. and launched on 3 September of the same year. KOS XX Was the very first of the shipping company’s boats to have a water tube boiler. For a number of years, the ship took part in several whaling seasons on many n different expeditions. in 1940, ships were requisitioned by the Norwegian Navy, and later the same year renamed HNoMS “Molde” with number “FY-1697”. and was converted to a patrol boat/anti submarine whaler and had 1x 4" Mark.XI Mod 2 cannon mounted on a platform forward of the wheelhouse mounted, 2x water cooled 12.7mm colt MG/52 machine guns mounted on each side of the ship, an air cooled 12.7 mm colt MG/53, a 20mm oerlicon cannon mounted forward of the sinking mines on a platform and 2 admiralty style sinking mine banks with two launchers.
Departed Halifax, NS, Canada as convoy escort, arriving Belfast, Northern Ireland 18 July. Since then Incorporated into the Liverpool Local Escort Force, at Liverpool, England from 1 November to 18 November 1943. The ship also served in the known the Shetland Department, Lerwik, Shetland from 11 November to 30 March 1944. then in the Navy Department in Scapa Flow, Shetland from 30 October to 20 February 1945. in 1945 the ship was stationed at Dundee in Scotland from 20 February to 8 May and was under The commander of the 1st minesweeper division. The ship Grunnstøtte off Vest-Senja in February 1946 under dramatic circumstances. It was on the ship’s last trip as a naval vessel and it never managed to be returned to the shipping company after the war effort. The stern sank and the bow was washed onto the sandy beach. this should be shown in the picture above in the post. The wreck was sold to A. Angelikoussis & P. Kaloudis, Piraeus, Greece. Who then converted the ship into a cargo vessel with a number of modifications and updates.
