HMS Nelson Review? IJN Nagato review?

Hello.

I’m just looking some chat about the shop and the British tech tree for playing naval.

I’m grinding the USA tree and enjoying naval.

Id consider Japan too if they are fun and what the IJN Nagato is like and they’re tree.

Thank you, 🙏

Ive not got a few of the latest ships (Fiji and KGV) and Ive not played Rank V in quite a while, but I can give a fairly reasonable overview of the British bluewater TT.

Destroyers and cruisers are for the most part good, some issue here or there, but overall, ive not got any major complaints (except Tiger being stupidly over BRed, but thats an event vehicle), gunna avoid talking about the dreadnoughts because ive genuinely not played them in years. Top tier is fine, bar 1 issue that i’ll talk about in more detail with Rodney.

Rodney (Nelsons sister ship)

Good, interesting ship, guns are fine, and the turret configuration is quite unique. Overall survivability is fine, at least it was the last time I played it.

All in all, a perfectly fine and quite fun 7.7. I use to really enjoy playing it.

That was until any 7.7-8.7 match rendered you totally DOA and a free kill for a Soyuz and that is the main reason why ive not played any 7.7+ ship, or even really much naval, in the better part of a year.

Which is a real shame because Britain top tier is actually quite good fun, just totally and hopelessly useless vs the Soyuz. If Soyuz moved to 9.0, I would immediately start playing the 7.7 lineup again. (though its a shame PoW isnt 7.7)

If you are looking to play at top tier Japan isn’t worth it currently IMO, even the general state of top tier aside Yamato and Musashi are utter garbage.
For the lower BRs initially you have DDs that suffer due to being over tired due to their torpedos that are highly situational at best, while their guns only have HE rounds (aside from a few C&P fletchers that Japan got post war). They have some decent CLs/ CAs but like most ships they suffer from the horrible compression in naval, the early BBs from 7.0 to 7.7 as in the same position, they where good ships and still are at their BR, but current compression will make them painful in an up tier especially the 7.7s that will be seeing the Iowa and Soybean.
I do not own Nagato but from what I have seen, she is a good ship, but for some reason is missing all the internal armour around her engine room which means hits amidships will cause massive crew lose and her BR means she will be facing Soybean and Iowa constantly.
So I would not recommend Japan for either DD ranks or top tier, for CLs to early BBs (about 5.0 to 7.3) they are still pretty fun.

Pretty much my opinion of Japan too, although IMO Iowa should probably be 9.0 and soybean 9.3… But maybe that’s just my time in Yamato talking… Yamato is just a lost cause at this point.

Yeah, that would work too, ive had less issue with Iowa overall, but definetly still a lot stronger than most.

Yeah, Fighting Yamatos in Rodney isnt that scary, need to be paying attention to what im doing, but its definetly not something I run from

Thank you guys, really appreciate the replies.

I’ll keep playing and enjoying the USA, still not played all the tech tree, I’ll learn and see what I enjoy most.

If I feel like a 2nd tech tree I’ll see what sales are near and consider.

Seems like 7.0 / 7.3 should be the upper BRs to stick to if I enjoy that range.

Any BR Line ups / combos that work?
I mainly play air sim with VR and hotas so I have all russa, majority USA, UK and Japan so I can fling in USA and UK planes to the lineups top.

I’ve burnt myself out with grounds since the ground forces beta. Naval (to me) has a strange early WW2 ground battle feel lol

Cheers guys! 🤘

Tosa is blatantly overpowered for its br. It could go up to 8.3 and it’d do nothing to its power level. Very few things at 8.0 can actually stand toe to toe against her. Except maybe another Tosa since they can resist each other.

Edit

Unironically, america has the best DDs but the cruisers either suck or a mixed bag.

NoDak is probably the single worst battleship in the game and 6.7+ starts the trend of 40 second reload (aced crew) dreadnoughts that don’t end until SoDak and NorCar.

Aye I’ve been reading that! Easy ammo detonation.

I always said when subs came id be onto naval but sometimes I can’t be bothered with a VR on for hours. I’m pretty much done with ground.

Naval EC will probably be what I enjoy, again I play air sim so really enjoy ec.

How do you find the 8.7s around it?

GB - waste of ammo, extremely spongy, avoid. Citadels if necessary.
US - go for ammo, guaranteed kill. Easiest ships to kill.
RU - avoid Soyuz at long distances, go for ammo at short. Other ships - ammo.
DE - go for ammo to cause as much fire as possible, will explode on its own.
IT - not sure really, lol.
FR - ammo since all of it is in front part because of front turrets design.
JAP - ammo or citadels, depends on ship. I tried to avoid.

I researched Yamato with Nagato. It was suprisingly easy.

Britain.

I dont play a lot of destroyer (just personal preference more than any complaints with the British Destroyers) But Tobruk & Daring I enjoy and Abdiel is a fun low BR cruiser. Im really hoping we get a County-Class Destroyer sooner rather than later, in block 1 config, she’ll have the same guns as Tobruk, but with SAMs

5.3

Dido is a lot of fun, combined with Leander & York is rather solid. Throw in something like Daring and Tobruk if you want some destroyers too. Aircraft Bomber Mossie is basically your go to wherever possible, unless you have the Wyvern.

5.7

Liverpool, Fiji (based upon my assumption of the guns and overall ship, still need to grind it) and London make quite a good lineup together. The Town-Class cruisers and variants are quite good, a bit squishy, but I enjoy them. Can throw Invincible in as well if you want something big. Glorious is also another option but whilst the guns are good, the low count and long reload, vs mostly lighter targets with no HE can make it a bit niche.

I have 6.0 lineup too, but that really needs Belfast and/or Tiger to be worthwhile.

7.0/7.3 is a lineup ive been meaning to make, but something like Repulse & Marlborough could be good. Renown and Barham too if you’ve got them. Can swap in early jets too, like the Sea Meteor

I need to play them more, but ive heard okay things about Queen Mary, Colossus, etc at 6.3

Hood, Rodney & Warspite at 7.7 use to be amazing, and is in anything other than a full uptier

This is one of the single most capable line ups in the game, if not the most capable at 5.3.

The York alone is annoyingly durable to anyone who doesn’t know how to kill a british cruiser quickly (read; the average player), with powerful, fairly fast firing main guns. Borderline immune to magazine explosions due to both the small size and how deep in the water the magazines are, surprisingly fast and maneuverable, the only thing the York can’t do very well is AA duty. York is every bit the definition of a bully and only really struggles at longer ranges (past 14km where dispersion starts ruining your day)

But for surface action, you can kill basically everything you see barring ships like the Nassaus and Courbet/Paris.

Leander is a fair bit squishier but her rapid fire 15.2s still hit deceptively hard. Main guns have really nice firing arcs, making VTFs mostly viable. Alternatively, you can just use the superior vertical arcs on the secondaries for VTF duty.

Then there’s the Queen of Carthage herself; fast, amazing gun arcs for anti air duty, deceptively durable despite her moderate armor and the 13.3cms have surprisingly good penetration values for SAP slingers. However, she’s top heavy and turns will make you unable to fire at targets reliably until she levels out.

Best played as a destroyer and light cruiser hunter, Dido’s biggest weakness is anything past 11km.

Yup. Ive been really meaning to dust it off now its 5.3 and not 5.7 where it was just pointless to pick over any other British Heavy.

I just like how her guns can do a full 360. Makes switching targets really easy.

Once kill a Soviet dreadnought in dido in an NEC match, with her 5.25" guns. No idea how, but me and the dreadnought guy were laughing about it in chat.

You would think the 5.7 british cruisers would just be more the same with York but they lose sections far faster. I don’t know if this is due to thinner plating or an anomaly with both them and the Pensacolas/New Orleans.

It’s a distinct, very unique advantage that also has really good turret traverse.

Crewed out, maybe?

I just generally treat British heavies as light cruisers but with 8" guns instead of 6" guns. Which is reasonably accurate because Britain actually followed the naval treaties, though had a plan to up-armour London iirc, which never happened.

I would not be surprised though if their armour and crew layouts were a bit stupid and totally ahistorical. (iirc, there is an issue with Londons crew distribution or something, too much in the citadel)

No, I was just spamming HE to set some fires and annoy him as I was behind and close but was out of Torps. I think I started a fire that somehow spread to the ammo, but this was before turret lift fires. So I really dont know what happened. Just one of those totally random hits. (Either that or I got the last hit but someone else did the killing blow?)

Who knows. I got killed by a Cleveland once in prenerf Scharnhorst because he hit a secondary.

Which somehow caused my entire ship to explode. Similar situation, maybe?

That’s arguably an issue with every british cruiser and doubly so with the 5.3s; losing a boiler can erase upwards of 30% of the crew on a single hit. The london class’s boilers are tiny though and trying to hit them can be really annoying.

Yeah. Probably needs an entire dedicated thread, with a team of people researching each and everyone and compiling reports for each. They all probably need some TLC

I don’t have it but every time I face it I know my chance of winning is really low. It a good ship.

Aim boilers, watch it repair and aim 'em again.

Congratulations, you’ve probably nuked the entirety of its crew in about three salvos.

By the time the guns are reloaded, the boiler has been repaired.
