Landing Pad Decal

Heli-Pad Emblem Information

The helicopter landing pad emblem commonly recognized as a large white circle with a bold letter “H” is a standardized aviation marking used to designate a safe landing and takeoff zone for rotary-wing aircraft aboard ships and on land installations. Can be painted on any suitably flat service using a set standard around the world.

What It Is

The marking typically consists of:

  • A white circle indicating the landing boundary sometimes other colors are used like yellow/orange sometimes phosphorus paint
  • A centered “H” identifying it specifically for helicopters
  • Occasionally, additional alignment lines or deck markings for approach guidance
  • On naval vessels, surrounding deck safety striping or touchdown grids

At sea, the emblem is painted on the flight deck of ships equipped to operate helicopters, such as destroyers, frigates, cruisers, amphibious assault ships, and supply vessels.

Historical Development

Helicopters became operationally viable during and after World War II, but their widespread naval deployment expanded significantly in the 1950s.

Early Naval Helicopter Use

  • In the late stages of WWII, the United States Navy experimented with early rotary aircraft like the Sikorsky Aircraft R-4 and HO3S.
  • By the time of the Korean War, helicopters were widely used for:
    • Search and rescue (SAR)
    • Anti-submarine warfare (ASW)
    • Medical evacuation
    • Ship-to-ship transport

As helicopter operations increased, standardized landing markings became essential for safety especially in rough seas.

Standardization of the “H” Marking

During the 1950s - 1960s, NATO and major naval powers adopted consistent deck markings for aviation operations.

  • The white “H” inside a circle became internationally recognized.
  • It provided clear visibility from the air, even in low-light or high-sea conditions.
  • Deck markings were aligned with wind-over-deck procedures for safe approaches.

Navies such as:

  • The Royal Navy
  • The Soviet Navy
  • The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force

all incorporated standardized helicopter deck symbols as rotary aviation became integrated into fleet doctrine.

Why this Decal should be added

This decal would make a great addition to the unlockable roster of decals as its a common emblem on ships and land installations. This decal would be scalable being able to be fit to any ship and even scaled down to tanks as in real life small drones have taken up the landing pad logo as it makes landing a bit easier. Overall dropping a large Heli pad emblem on the back of a ship would be cool especially if we get a 3D decoration of a Helicopter. There are many different versions so many different Decals can be cooked up. This would not be a large 3D decoration just a decal of the pad like someone painted it on. Finally it would look snazzy on the back of IJN Yamato.
