I think that if these jets kept getting uptier from 13.0 - 13.7 then might as well make them 13.0 with AIM 9M just to make it fair. These jets kept fighting against fox 3 missiles like SU-30 MKK like HOW IS IT NOT 13.7 WITH SIX FOX 3, FOUR FOX 1, AND STILL HAVE THE ABILITY TO CARRY 2 BOMBS for a base. This sounds like more of a complaint to the SU-30 but just give AIM 9M to F-18.
How exactly a 9m would help you fighting against R77 and R73s? It doesn’t have a good overload, it’s not especially fast. What it would do is move F-18s to at least 13.0 and remove the last possibility of this jet being anyway fun. At 13.0 you’ll be sucked into 14.0 constantly. And 14.0 is where all the fun ends very abruptly. BVR isn’t fun and, to be honest, was meant for former arty players in a certain potato game.
What needs to happen is su-30 becoming at least 13.7, and better 14.0.
The 9M doesnt need insane 40G pull when it literally has a smokeless motor and a flare-gating system that completely ignores pre-flaring from the rear, making it almost invisible compared to the giant white trail of an R73. Youre complaining about 13.0 or 14.0 uptiers but a 12.7 jet is already getting dragged up there anyway, so why not take the massive upgrade? Defending against R77s means flying low to use multipathing and forcing a visual dogfight, which is exactly where a sneaky, unflarable missile shines while those Su-30s are distracted by their radar.
You do realize it’s going straight to 13.0 if it gets up to 6 AIM-9Ms right? which means rather then seeing a max of 4 13.7s it will be seeing full matches of 13.7s and 14.0s

I mean you bought it, and you got what you got. Shouldve done more research in whether buying the jet was a good idea.
Plus, many things suffer in an uptier, F-18C is no different. Imagine how 11.7 feels after getting uptiered to fight an F-18C, and now especially since you want to give it an Aim-9M.

The AIM-9M’s IRCCM doesnt ignore pre-flaring from the rear? As far as I’m aware any sort of flare within it’s FOV before launch just shuts off the seeker until it stops having flares in front of it. And also firing a 9M rear-aspect is not always good practice since it’s more easily flarable. What is better are side and top-down shots that unless the enemy notices and flares a 9L would also get the kill.
The smokeless motor also doesn’t really do too much. Unless the enemy isn’t aware and/or for some reason he doesn’t get a missile diamond then the same shot can, again, be achieved by a 9L.
Wouldn’t call it a massive upgrade really. Sure it might give you a couple kills that a 9L would be flared if launched. But that’s about it. Considering you’re multipsthing you’re already minimizing one advantage of the 9M; Top-down shots.
No… Not exclusively. Defending against R-77s means multipsthing and/or notching. By flying low you’re giving throwing any advantage you could’ve had over an Su-30/etc away.
How will a 9M be sneaky if you’ve already forced the dogfight? It’s gonna be very situationally advantageous to have the 9M solely because of the IRCCM if and only if the launch can give the 9M room to maneuver. Which you might aswell try to use the Vulcan instead.
Yes, that was an unfortunate decision on Gaijins part, the lengths they will go to to avoid decompression is shocking.
But to get out in front of the argument, lets look at the difference between the F/A-18C(early) vs the F-15A if you gave the F/A-18 AIM-9Ms
The F/18 would have up to 6 AIM-9s vs the F-15s 4, better radar missiles in the AIM-7P, far better radar with TWS and basic NCTR that gives far better situational awareness, much better RWR with +/- 60 deg coverage vs the +/- 45 on the F-15 and can detect more radar frequencies.
The F/A18 is also more agile, while the F-15 has more CMs and a higher top speed.
I think it’s safe to say the F/A-18s with AIM-9Ms would be far stronger then even the F-15s if they stayed at 12.7.
