Type 2 Ho-I Prototype (Not the Experimental Type 1 Ho-I)

The second Ho-I prototype had been completed in December of 1942. The turret was redesigned by Hitachi, Ltd, The upper slope of the turret was removed and the sides had instead been heightened. The side armor plate were now strengthened by supporting rivets. The frontal armour thickness of the turret was increased from 25mm to 50 mm. The front mantlet had also been changed, this time having better angles to deflect enemy projectiles. This time the tank chassis was manufactured by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, and the gun was modified to be closer to the Army’s standards.

.

Type1 Chi-He Prototype
The Chi-He project decided to use the Chi-Ha Kai’s shinhoto turret and advance on it. The shinhoto turret was still spasely armoured like the chassis of the Chi-Ha, and lessons learned from the Chi-Ho indicated that welded face-hardened steel was the best way of improving the armor of the tank. This differed to the standard tank construction method of using riveted connection of steel plating. Production of the prototypes began in late 1941, but was delayed due to the successful results the Chi-Ha Kai achieved in the field. It took until September of 1942 for the first prototype to be completed and tested.

Not fully sure if these photos are the prototype

Type 2 Ka-Mi Prototype (Special Motor Launch Vehicle)
By 1941, Mitsubishi had nearly completed the requested vehicle and began conducting numerous testing trials in Hamada lake, Shizuoka Prefecture. The tank prototype was completed by 1942 and surprised many with the method Mitsubishi had decided upon. The tank had been designed with completely new parts instead of using an existing chassis as a base, though it was clearly influenced by Mitsubishi’s experience from working with the Ha-Go. The SNLF would call it the Special Motor Launch Vehicle. This was an entirely political designation, as the existing conflict between the Army and Navy prevented the Navy from receiving their own tank designs. Once it officially entered service, the designation became the Type2 Ka-Mi Motor Launch.

Type 97 Te-Ke Prototype (Still not fully sure on that 94/97 hybrid looking one I posted before)
The origins of the Type 97 lay in a prototype diesel-engine version of the Type 94 TK developed by Hino Motors in 1936. Although the prototype had a more powerful engine and larger gun, initial trials were not successful and the Japanese Army demanded changes before acceptance. Hino responded with a modified prototype in November 1937, in which the engine was moved towards the rear of the chassis. This design was accepted and full production began in 1938.

Not much info on this one.

What I found:
“The hull and turret are almost identical to the 99HSP, but the barrel is a dummy. The helmets worn by the crew are yellow work helmets. The lights are LED. I suspect this is an experimental vehicle utilizing an existing vehicle for basic research into the next generation of vehicles.”

“Engine test by Mitsubishi Hvmtr , not allowed weapons test in private property in Japan ! turlet and gun by JSW ltd . dummy barrel for balanced weight and counter weight behind.”

So-To 47mm
Tens of these models were constructed for use in China, carrying the standard 37mm anti tank gun used at the time. Later models were tested with the 47mm.

Technically there should be a prototype but its already hard enough to tell if the 47mm even existed.

Possible Type 98 Chi-Ho other prototypes
In real life, two prototypes would be produced by Mitsubishi and Jidosha Kogyo in 1940, while two more would be made by Kokura and the Sagami Arsenal in 1941.
If anyone got more info on these that would be great.

Type 3 Ka-Chi Prototype
The Type 3 Ka-Chi prototype was completed in late 1943 and the first units entered service that same year.
Not fully sure if this photo is the prototype: Nasake Island, Kure, Japan, 27 Feb 1944. Might be the Ho-Ni II and Ho-Ro and how the prototype was used in service.

The smoke launchers shouldn’t become separate tanks imo. They should just be modifications for the tech tree Chi-Ha and Ha-Go. On that note, both the Ha-Go and the I-Go should receive their anti-aircraft machine guns, too.

Edit: The varied smoke launchers could also all be added as separate modifications, with the ability to switch between them in the same way that the American A-26B-10-DL can switch between its three variations of nose gun armaments.

Haven’t said anything about it being a separate tank for the tt. I just had photos to share not related to the tt project. But yeah I don’t get why we didn’t get the mods already in game.

Found this old gem in my folder but some stuff don’t add like the Type5 Na-To Il and Type5 Na-To II Kai

Yeah. I’ll be honest, I don’t really like those early tech trees for the exact reasons that a lot of the vehicles are, iffy. Or just outright fake. Especially the horrid heavy section, with tanks like the “Type 97,” the “Mitsu-104,” and the “Type 4/Type 5” that don’t appear in anything other than foreign intelligence reports. The “Ishi-108” is probably the most egregious of those, it’s literally just an A1E1 Independent and, like the other “heavies,” doesn’t appear in any actual Japanese sources or had any engineers attesting to their existence.

N4MELESS Do you have the photos by any chance?

The M55 has been leaked to be coming, though not as a vehicle for Japan.

Japan haven’t operated M55 as I know

Was confusing it with the M52A1, my bad.

Has the Chi-He turret you can see the extra armor in the front half of the turret. I remember seeing extra armor for the hull (still chi ha kai shape) but I’m still looking for it (not talking about the track armor) that one would be the Chi Ha Kai applique. Also I’m not sure if this is the late chi ha or early Hull.

I honestly cant see it.
This may be the only photo of a Shinhoto Chi-Ha with Imphal style extra armour. If you noticed the plate on the middle upper part of the hull, it probably looked a little out of place. That's because it came from an American made M3 stuart. Only three tanks were outfitted with this style of applique armour. This one is missing the lower portion of it's armour,

These are definitely not the same tank as in the Ropkey museum, note the placement of the rivets, as the Chi-He turret has two extra sets near the front and side as a result of the extra armor.

I don’t have any other photos of this exact tank, but considering again the placement of the rivets I think it’s safe to say that it’s not a Chi-He turret. Not to mention, no other photos or surviving vehicles from this theater show such things.

chihakailogsnorthkurilgarrison1945

Yeah, the Chi-Ha in your image does not appear to be equipped with the applique armor. There is, however, at least one image of this improvement, which I made a post regarding alongside a different modification from Imphal.
image

Nope, all seem to be WW2 creations, you can read about them here.

It’s the small square plate outlined in the last image, I could hardly consider it “applique armor” but I guess it would provide a little bit of protection.
image
I wouldn’t concern yourself with it too much, because more interesting things have happened in Imphal anyways.
